Is this okay for tea at the Ritz and ROH?

We visit London quite often, but mostly supper in Marylebone, picnic in the park, the theatre, lunch by the river, an exhibition or Ronnie Scott's (or work!) Basically, nice stuff but nothing fancy, just wear jeans or a day dress. This outing is unusual for me...

We are celebrating DD's 16th birthday in January with a trip to Mikimoto for pearl earrings, tea at the Ritz and Onegin at the Royal Opera House. We are overnighting at the Ritz (already looking forward to breakfast!)

DD has an amazing Sister Jane dress.

Would this dress do for me? How do people dress for ROH? Is it better in black or cream? (I'm a Deep Autumn apparently) And what shoes might work? I was hoping I might get away with loafers as I hate heels.

Any ideas appreciated!

Can’t really comment as went to Greggs for my daughters 16th.

imustbeanidiot · 08/11/2024 21:17

That's a gorgeous dress, will be perfect for afternoon tea. Enjoy.

corlan · 08/11/2024 21:18

It's a lovely dress. Anything and everything goes for the Royal Opera House. You're just as likely to see someone in jeans as you are to see someone dressed up to the nines although I think most people make an effort to be smart.

Konfuzzled · 08/11/2024 21:19

Looks great. You'll see a massive range at ROH, from jeans and t shirts to full length evening dresses. Most people just wear whatever you'd wear out to a restaurant for dinner.

@Everythingaches Why did you then?

WimpoleHat · 08/11/2024 21:19

Honestly - anything goes at the ROH. Some people will be very dressed up, others will be in jeans. There’s a real mix. The only thing that looks a bit out of place is full black tie (you look like you’re playing in the orchestra then!). Have a wonderful evening!

OtterOnAPlane · 08/11/2024 21:20

It's nice!

You won't steal the limelight from your amazing DD, but it's pretty and appropriate.

I love the sound of your day. My DDs are only little but I might nick your idea for when the time comes!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 08/11/2024 21:20

I'd go with the Ivory, unless you really much prefer the black, in which case jazz it up with some bright accessories. The black looks a bit ..... serious.

DieDreiHexen · 08/11/2024 21:23

Thank you! I think I'm going to try the cream dress with shiny black loafers.

I'm very clumsy, hopefully I won't drop anything on it.

@OtterOnAPlane This is DD's dress. Unless I go full Grayson Perry, it's going to be very hard to uostage😆

I love that dress! I've had afternoon tea at the Ritz and it's fabulous...! Enjoy!

I'm also partial to a Greggs though😀

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 08/11/2024 21:27

I wore this to Onegin a couple of weeks ago. Your choices are fine although I personally wouldn't buy something new specifically for ROH. I've stayed a few times at The Ritz and it is fabulous although these days usually stay at The Radisson Blu Mercer Street as it's so handy for ROH.

I’d quite like you to adopt me please OP. The dress is beautiful, I love it in cream.

Having said all that I saw the most vile outfit I've ever seen at Onegin.

If anyone is reading this and you were the woman sitting about 5 seats from me at the front of the stalls carrying the white fox fur stole- it was hideous and I felt sick looking at it.

I buy new for the local boozer if the mood takes me 😊

I don't need to. I've plenty already that meet the criteria of "dress up for ROH"

Softdressesandblouses · 08/11/2024 21:47

Absolutely love you DD's dress - stunning! I really like your Me&Em choice, too, and for afternoon tea, it's perfect.
As others have said, there's a huge variety of dress at ROH with no 'code' except that you feel comfortable and are wearing what you like. If it were me, and given I'd be staying at the Ritz and able to change after tea, I'd probably pick a flowing maxi dress type thing for the opera. I really like the Me&Em mary janes that are shown with your dress, too, and would wear them with my maxi, and loafers, as you've already suggested for the cream dress.
Have a wonderful time - it sounds like a very special birthday celebration for your DD!

DieDreiHexen · 08/11/2024 21:13

I would go for the black version though, especially if you are going for afternoon tea, it wont be a very relaxing experience if you are having to be hyper vigilant not to spill anything on it! Although you might be one of those women who manage to stay immaculate no matter what :)

TheHighPriestess1 · 08/11/2024 21:58

Pointy black flats maybe ? with the ivory ?

Came here to say the same! This would've been my dream 16th birthday (and with my 28th round the corner it's still not looking too bad 😉)

I love the colour, but I’m as tall or taller than that model and I would have struggled to pull off that length in any situation involving sitting down even at her age.
