Dresses and tights - what is "acceptable"

I have a gorgeous pair of brown suede ankle boots with a low heel that I've been wearing with jeans/trousers and I love them. I'd like to wear them with dresses or skirts, specifically I have a midi-length demin skirt, a knee length light blue denim-style cotton dress with long sleeves and a knee length work dress that is cream with brown and black accents.

BUT.. what tights? In winter I'm usually a black tights - usually thick - with black boots kind of woman. Clearly black tights are NOT going to work here. But I'm a bit worried that flesh coloured tights are going to make me look like I'm channelling Taylor Swift on stage? Are flesh coloured tights okay/ Do they need to be a specific shade or thickness?

To adjust an old phrase, you can have any colour you like, but not black. And sheers or opaques (maybe that’s weather driven) will go equally well.

Grey/navy/cream wool might work?

I like the idea of cream wool actually. Or more brown rather than flesh coloured. going to check out options! Navy feels sccary... but could work for the demin skirt or blue dress.

Yes, cream wool, I saw a shop mannequin dressed in a denim maxi, cream tights and brown ankle boots last week and it looked really good

H and M have a kind of mole/ mink type of light wool tights. I wear them with boots and my new woolly midi dress

I know not everyone on MN approves of Snag tights but they have a great range of patterned and coloured tights in a range of weights that are a good alternative to black or skin coloured tights.

Brown opaque is nice and will lengthen your leg with the continuation of brown into the boot.

Wow, I'm obviously a walking fashion disaster as I wear brown boots with thick black tights, and I've seen them on others as well.

I am exactly the same! I have a few pairs of brown boots that I wear with black opaque tights and I think they look absolutely fine.

Same. Always wear black tights regardless of colour of footwear. I think it looks pretty good. No-one has fainted at the sight yet anyway.

I have short legs so would match my tights to my boots to try and work some leg-lengthening magic.

That said, I wear brown boots over black jeans so I’m not sure why black tights would be different.

When I have this kind of dilemma, I tend to match the tights to the dress.

It doesn't really matter in the general scheme of things; you have all the options, and some will seem better at some times than others!

Have you considered some autumn coloured tights, browns and oranges?

I love navy tights

I am going to look into cream and navy and also some "proper" brown tights. I'm afraid that I simply can't do brown boots with black tights. It does not work for me.

I am just not sure about the creamy dress with the black/brown accents - it's a good work dress and in the past I've worn it with black tights - sheer or opaque - and black boots or heels. But I'd like to wear it with the brown boots. I might have to try some brown/tan opaque/sheer tights for that. I do have some natural sheer tights bought for wearing under things that I might try it with to see how it looks and get a better sense of what would work beyond that.

You don’t have to go full Taylor shiny dance tights. You can wear very natural sheer matt tights to give the bare legged effect that the Phase Eight model has with her boots and dress on your link.

I wear Marks skin tone light tights for dresses and boots and I think it looks more modern than matching navy tights with navy frock (although I have done this recently and nobody fainted, even though I felt a bit matchy).

Interested in the cream wool tights suggested by PP, I have leopard boots and have been stuck for what to put with them and I think that could crack it!

I think black tights rarely work, to my eye anyway, so I agree with you and the others saying this. Either match the shoe or go for a clash, personally I match the shoe because I'm not cool!

Black opaques or nude only for me. And Nude only for dressier things.

I’ve never got into coloured tights.

Claret tights are fairly mainstream (not too Fairy School Librarian as one poster on here put it once) and would go with blue or brown.
