Mid thigh length skirts/dresses no longer suit me

I'm mid 40s and although the dress fits me OK I just don't think I can pull it off any longer.

I don't know why but it just looks wrong! I used to love this style.

Tried undoing the zip first? Seriously, midi kength is the most flattering for older ladies. Knee length is frumpy, and mini doesn’t look good unless you have great legs!

henlake7 · 22/10/2024 14:44

idk,I think you can still look good but it does require either great legs or thick tights!
Im 50s and have pretty bad varicose veins but if I stick with opaque tights or leggings then its fine.

kinkytoes · 22/10/2024 17:45

Thanks maybe I'll try tights. My legs are pretty good, I run.

Anyone got any photos to illustrate someone my age looking good in this length please?

Maybe there's something wrong with my eyes/brain instead! 😂

It’s almost certainly nothing to do with your legs. What you may be observing is that you look perhaps more careworn than previously. Or maybe your hairstyle is no longer flattering? Or maybe the clothes you’re wearing with the skirts are too scruffy or stiff or outdated. Maybe it’s your posture?

Remember mini skirts are associated with being carefree and adventurous - if your actual persona is not conveying that right now the skirts will look wrong.

But probably it’s just a phase that you’ll go through and come out of eventually. Maybe at 55 or 60 you’ll find you like the way you look in them again. Plenty of people do.

Mini skirts rarely suit anyone except models. You don’t wear them for how they make you look, but how they make you feel. A mini / tailored shorts with black tights, boots and a jumper makes me feel stylish and I’m a frumpy 40 something with fat legs lol

Forgive me for my feeble quip in response to you not being able to pull your dress off!

kinkytoes · 22/10/2024 23:07

Oh @BeetledBrow eek! 😅 you've probably hit the nail on the head with your post there. I'll hold onto the dress instead of slinging it straight into the charity bag, just in case!

This sounds like a fab look.

It's probably more to do with the style of the dress and what you are wearing it with than the actual length.

I'm quite a bit older than you, short and overweight but I would wear a short jumper/tunic dress - but they are very casual and I wear with thick tights and boots. (I think I look fine - but maybe others don't!)

Garlicbest · 24/10/2024 03:32

God, I'm 1,000 years old and wear short skirts. I think I look okay. Nobody stares and looks away giggling! Almost always with opaque tights, though I did go bare-legged in the five days of summer we had this year and would wear with plain tights if I had to look 'smart'.

I think @BeetledBrow nailed it, and there's also the thing about not looking as you expected to in that outfit. You'll bump up against this several times in the coming decades; you have to tweak your mental image of yourself as you go. When this happens, I find it helpful to try on several completely new (to me) looks: it shakes my ideas up.
