Help me suggest some “party” clothes for 16 year old DD

My 16 year old isn’t interested in clothes or fashion at all. She lives in leggings and tshirts (like man sized ones) and baggy jumpers. She is 5’6” and a size 10. She has long legs, a short body and 32c chest.

she has two parties coming up . one is a family wedding anniversary at a nice hotel. The other a teenagers 16th birthday house party.

I’ve been looking online at various sites with her tonight for things that she could wear. She’s quite keen to get something but can’t find anything she likes. She is so used to her t shirts and leggings she doesn’t know what she wants or what she would feel comfortable in.

definite nos are dresses. She might consider a skirt. She doesn’t like long sleeves. Or anything tight or restrictive. She’s not that keen on showing her cleavage.

any suggestions? Either of sites that we can look at. Or styles.

we both want her to be comfortable, both physically and mentally, but also look like she’s made a bit of an effort.

Fancy tee, skirt, tights and booties.

Mumof1andacat · 14/10/2024 21:16

House party I'd be tempted for slightly oversized t-shirt (like a band t-shirt) tucked in to a mini skirt but not a short one. Tights and chunky boots. Gold necklaces (like a set of them) she'd look fab

GreenBag53 · 14/10/2024 21:17

Jumpsuit?

teenddeating · 14/10/2024 21:17

My DD chose a sleeveless top from H&M and a chiffon style tie dye long sleeve top over and plain black trousers. She hates dresses / skirts so I feel your pain!

How about something like this

www.next.co.uk/style/su447217/ad9125#ad912

Wear with a black top, fitted t shirt or long sleeves

Then either black tights, leggings or bare legs depending on venue and weather.

I would wear knee length boots but would look great with ankle boots too

HappyDane · 14/10/2024 21:28

Oh yes, jumpsuit is another good suggestion. Just make sure it has a side zip or buttons at the front so she can easily get in and out of it when needed!

Garlicbest · 14/10/2024 21:32

That Joe Brown's skirt's a real winner!

Re the family party, OP, I was thinking about oversized dresses that wouldn't feel too weird to a girl who lives in oversized tees 🙂 You haven't mentioned budget - my initial find was this one, it's £190.

Wide legged trousers, smart, baggy t-shirt tucked in and trainers. Would be like a switched up version of what she usually wears?

I noticed most teenage girls either do tight lycra dresses and trainers for parties, or really dress down, like black wide trousers, a big grey sweater and maybe a necklace.

PiggieWig · 14/10/2024 21:34

IME they are all dressed to the nines in Pretty Little Thing co-ords for a 16th birthday party.

Would she be comfy in something like this?

Satin midi skirt, baggy tshirt tucked in, and a chunky necklace with either boots or trainers!

SqueegieBeckenheimer · 14/10/2024 21:38

My DD almost 16 was looking at some faux leather skirts in H&M the other day.

I think this is one of them.

Either with a band t shirt or black jumper and tights & DMs.

Mine is a little younger but some of her friends are turning 16 and to parties she tends to wear either a mini co ord or last week she wore a sequin mini skirt with an oversize white tshirt and campus trainers. Occasionally she wears low waist wide leg jeans with a baby tee or another big favourite is a black oversized tshirt dress or black mini skirt and tshirt with leather jacket. All with trainers.

leia24 · 14/10/2024 21:40

^ she buys from zara, PLT, occasionally oh polly.

Singleandproud · 14/10/2024 21:41

Disturbia, if you can get passed the Gothicness and faux leather has some great outfits and are good quality. She'll find something comfy but quirky on there.

LudwigsWife · 14/10/2024 21:50

My 16 yo DD pretty much exclusively goes to Brandy Melville for nice/special occasion bits. It's smart casual rather than formal stuff. She also likes Holister. She would wear jeans and a top or t-shirt for occasions like you describe, and trainers. She is very much not a dress or skirt person but she did get a dress this summer for an event which required it and she surprised herself by wearing it several times so your DD might find she changes her kind on that front.

Thanks everyone. The pretty little things top that @Garlicbest suggested she likes. The jersey wide leg trousers from @PiggieWig also seem to be a hit. I like the idea of a jumpsuit, though may be tricky peeing. Thanks. We have a few more ideas

I love this website for fun colourful outfits. They have some nice skirt and top combos that might be suitable for a teen party.

Just randomly came across this thread and this website you've shared @Illpickthatup . This is right up my street!

I don't know if I'm their market (37yo) - But I've already popped a few bits in my basket that will be amazing over the Christmas!

Thanks for sharing

16 year olds don’t dress up the same as we used to back in the day. So to go to a house party is leggings and a nice oversized t shirt would be perfectly acceptable. We went to see a tribute band the other day and my teen was in jeans and a crop top. Family party and the pub at same weekend leggings and a t shirt.

keely79 · 16/10/2024 06:33

We have a 15 year old with similar style and build. For a recent family wedding anniversary do we got her a pair of wide black trousers and a waistcoat from Zara (worn without shirt underneath). She was comfy and looked really well put together. A bit like this:
