Bugger....fly away "big" hair.

Had the "weight" taken out of my hair a few weeks back, hairdresser chopped into it with those scissors with the flat blades. The thing is, my hair (which is down to the base of my neck) is now quite fly away and wispy, if I shake my head I get this massive halo of hair which I never had before!

I wasn't straightening it every day before because I was trying to improve the condition, but now my hair seems to NEED straightening again, I have noticed as well the natural kink in it has become far more noticable. So to my question, is it normal for this to happen when the hair has been thinned out? I am a bit upset really cos it looks like I will have to start straightening every day again and it will take me an age to grow all the short bits out (some of the hair underneath is only about 3 inches long). Is there anything I can do to help my hair whilst I grow it ALL over again???
