What can I wear with these boots this winter?

I'm 45 and in a bit of a style rut - is there anything I can do with my winter boots to make some stylish new looks? Or do I need to get new clothes and new boots?!

I work from home mostly so looking for ideas for day to day (school run, days out with kids) or going out for lunch/dinner/drinks with friends.

I went out this weekend & looking around I could see my style is dated but I don't know where to start tbh.

Grateful for any advice/suggestions please!

I'm not a fashion guru but I try to keep on top of it so this is what I know (same age as you btw!)

Knee boots - very much back in fashion, but with long or midi skirts, (or a-line pleated mini if you have the legs for that - I don't). So you could try your knee boots with a long pleated skirt, a belt and a round neck cardigan?

Pointed toe boots are a bit more 2024 but I think yours are a good classic option. Apparently knee socks showing are also back on trend - very y2k.

Brown is on trend too so your lace up boots could work well - maybe look up some "dark academia" looks and see if you can make an outfit?

Also textured tights - say black opaque tights with embroidered black polka dots or diamonds on. These would go well with your brown ankle boots and a preppy look?

I think your black ankle boots are the least "on trend"of your three styles - if that's what you're after - as they are quite low heel and neutral toe, where this year has seen a revival of higher or kitten heels with square or pointy toes.

wider leg cropped trousers are nice

I don't think those knee boots are quite right for lunches out, but absolutely fine for practical outfits like for the school run. Kind of ditto the brown lace-ups, I like them but they're not exactly going to update any outfits.

Actually, contrary to PP, of the three I think I prefer the black ankle boots. I'd wear them with maybe a satin slip or fitted wool midi skirt and jumper. Possibly opaque black tights under, as they're a dodgy height on the ankle. They'd be better if they went a bit higher up the leg, but black tights would hide that.

It might be time to buy some new boots, if you have the option.

The lace-ups are gorgeous.

Sorry - that wasn't much help.

But they are.

That's really helpful thank you! I might treat myself to some pointy boots 👍

Yes I can do - sounds like pointy boots are the way to go. I was hoping I could get outfits to update the boots but sounds like I need the full hit!

Aww thanks - I just don't know what to put them with! Previous years I've worn them with skinny or straight jeans but not sure now. I think I've just lost confidence in my choices, what suits me etc. In the past I've been sooo confident in what I liked/wore but just feel old and crap! I'm off to Google dark academia!! I'm going shopping on Saturday so hopefully will have some ideas by then!! Xx

I'm very small and skinny (except for the 3 children belly which I'm working on ha!) so I'm not sure I could pull off a wide cropped trouser! But def could try wider leg because that seems to be more stylish?

Have a look at Disturbia, once you get past the Gothicness they have some great quality clothes that can fit that dark academia look and fab customer services if you need to return, the sizing is quite generous. DD has the pinstripe trousers with braces and they look great with a short or white t shirt and her boots.

Admittedly she's a svelte teen who looks good in everything as we all did at that age.

They have some longish check skirts that would be perfect with those brown boots for winter.

Joe Browns is another good hit if you like the Dark Academia look and there's a long thread on Style somewhere.

OP, the WhoWhatWear website is quite good for outfit ideas. So is WhatToWearFor_ on Instagram.

Come back and show us what you bought!

Thanks for all your help! ...I got some wide leg jeans, pointy boots and trainers. Plus 3 basic jumpers and a little leopard print jacket. @famfamofthree sure you can see the "what to wear to..." influence here! I also spotted some nice argle knits and skirts/trousers that would go with the dark academia style which I will go back for next pay day.

Aaah OP! These are all stunning!!! You look great! 😍 So pleased you are happy with your haul.

Those boots are amazing - though not sure I could cope with the heel myself- but you look great in everything!

Hope you get some dark academia bits to showcase your brown lace up boots!
