What to do with my hair? (Pics)

Help me Mumsnet!

My hair is long and more or less all one length. Except for the fringe. It's been like this some time and I am feeling the need for a change....

I have had almost every hair length from very, very short cropped to long and everything in between.

I was planning to keep it long for the foreseeable, but I am feeling bored and also currently not convinced I am really looking my best. My hair is thin and naturally wavy (quite coarse and wildly frizzy) and gets tangly very easily and the ends look cobwebby and thin. I am increasingly thinking that long is not the best option...

What should I do?

My requirements for a shorter cut are:
Either above or below my shoulders (I hate that in-between length where it sits on shoulders and flicks out)

I need to be able to tie it up for lazy days, even if the pony tail is stubby.

I want a cut that looks good worn straight or wavy (I am naturally wavy, and this is more apparent when my hair is shorter, but also like to do heatless curls or use a curling iron sometimes)

Obviously whatever I choose will need to work with the current fringe situation.

I am looking for inspiration to take along to my next hair appointment. Just worried I will regret having it chopped shorter, particularly if I can't tie it back.

Here are some relatively recent photos (link so I can delete them at some point) showing my hair as it is now and how I usually wear it (either straight or overnight heartless curls and I often wear it with the front tied back off my face a bit).

Your hair looks good to me as it is, but if you want a complete change I think you would suit a kind of pixie cut with a wispy fringe. It would show off your lovely firm jawline.

Inspireme2 · 05/10/2024 20:32

I like your hair with curls.
How about shorter and add some highlights to your hair.

VoteLabour · 05/10/2024 20:36

It looks great but I'd consider having a longer fringe, but agree that you could carry off a short cut.

A nice long layered Bob would look good. I'm biased as it's what I'm going to have next x

I have had a pixie before. That was the last style I had before I grew my hair out of its current length. For various reasons (including how awful growing short hair back out again is) I don't want to go quiet so short again at the moment.

Maybe I should leave it be. Some days I do think it's OK, but other times I think it looks a bit naff.

It doesn't look naff to me, it's nice.

Thanks! So do I. Although my hair has stopped holding the heatless curls quite so well in the last few months, which is annoying. And I don't generally have time for hot tools on the daily.

I am not keen on colouring. I have had my hair all sorts of colours over the years. The only thing I would still like to try is blonde, but I have never been brave enough (not sure it would suit my colouring and also due to my hair being so dark I expect it would cost a fortune). But I have started going grey now so I would rather stay natural at this point, enjoy my natural colour while it lasts, and just let they grey come in naturally!

I do think shorter. Maybe just above my shoulders. But I am worried I will find it a bit "meh".

Her hair is gorgeous!
I generally have my fringe a bit shorter initially but cut on a slight curve so I can then let it grow out and go longer between cuts. I find when it gets too long it just irritates me and I end up clipping it back all the time.
I could grow it out but then my face feels naked. 😆

Would you mind sharing a pic of what you mean? I did Google but lots of different styles come under that umbrella.

I have to be careful with layers as my hair is thin. My lovely hairdresser knows I just like a blunt cut. Although I think if it was shorter it might be more forgiving to layers. But I have spent so long asking specifically for NO LAYERS that the concept is alien.

Can I just second this! You leave a beautiful face that can pull of a middle parting, I’d grow my fringe down a bit l get that cut and a curling wand - you have gorgeous hair.

HareMusing · 06/10/2024 17:12

Thank you @SoNiceToComeHomeTo that's kind.

Maybe I just want a change for the sake of it, which might not be the best reason for a chop. This is the longest time I have had one hairstyle. I used to change it all the time without much thought. I grow more cautious with age. 😂

You'd look lovely with a long shaggy perm which would add volume. It looks a bit limp and lifeless just hanging down straight.

Abiharwich · 06/10/2024 17:53

If you look for longer layered bob, lots of photos come up. I have the opposite hair which is so thick it looks like Lego! I'm sure your hairdresser will be able to give you some advice, I have seen layers on finer hair and it can look really good x

Yes, see this is what I worry about. And also that it might be ageing me a bit.

Thank you for all the comments anyway, much appreciated. Some food for thought.

I think I will book a restyle for my next appointment and chat to my hairdresser about it. Worst case I chicken out, just end up having my normal trim, and paying a bit more for it. 😂

The fringe is not doing you any favours. You have a lovely face shape. How about something like this. The colour will give you volume and some more interest

Just my opinion but I think hair past a certain length never looks good unless it's really well 'groomed' and usually thick (thinking of Princess of Wales here with her bouncy hair.)

I think you'd look much better with a good 6 inches chopped off and leave it just on your shoulders. Or just above.

TBH it's looks a bit uncared for as it's quite thin and straggly.

Going shorter will give it more bounce and look thicker.

You've a beautiful oval face and your hair should frame it rather than just hanging a bit limply.

Your fringe needs some kind of change. It's parting in the middle so it needs to be either swept to one side or shorter.

CoastalCalm · 06/10/2024 20:32

French Bob would look lovely

HareMusing · 08/10/2024 13:40

Oh lawks. I've had a fringe for years now, not sure how I feel about being fringe-less. 😂

Thank you for all the honest opinions, I appreciate them all.

What about something like this (maybe a touch shorter)?

These look cute, but quite short. I really do need to be able to tie it back/clip it up in some way.

I think this too, not too different to what you have now just updated.

HareMusing · 12/10/2024 14:38

I am booked in! ☺️

After a fair bit of googling... I am taking pics of Dakota Johnson in as my hair inspiration. I have decided to keep the fringe and take it a bit shorter. As currently it's neither one thing or another (as a PP said).

I like her bob. And look she can still tie it up so that works for me.

I am quite excited!

I'd let your fringe grow out a bit. Plus, Cut a good inch off the ends. This will even it out a bit a should look lovely on you.
