What have I done to my face?

I have sensitive and acne prone skin, I’m in my early 40s. I usually stick to simple or boots products, recently I’ve been using a boots face wash with salicylic acid in it, simple face toner, a salicylic acid serum and a simple moisturiser. My skin had never looked better than these last few weeks. Anyway I ran out of moisturiser so decided to try a boots collagen moisturiser, I used it twice and on the second day my face started to itch and came out in tiny itchy spots all over, I assumed I must have been allergic to the moisturiser so stopped it and went back to a simple one. But now I’m not so sure, I thought the rash would just die down but what’s actually happened is my whole face has dried out to the extent that it’s really tight and the skin has gone quite scaley. I put make up on for the first time since Tuesday (the day it flared up) today and had to get it off as soon as I got home as my fave felt so dry and tight, now I’ve smothered it in Vaseline.
Just wondering if people think it was an allergic reaction or have I overdone it with the salicylic acid? I’m gutted because for the first time I years my skin looked good!!

how often were you using the salicylic acid, think your only meant to use it about twice per week?

It sounds like you’ve damaged your skin barrier. Probably started with the collagen cream and now using the salicylic acid is making it worse.

You will need to strip back your routine until it heals. Don’t use any active ingredients or acids. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser and if you want to a barrier repair cream. If you’ve got sore bits a tiny bit of hydrocortisone might help too.

Overdoing the actives gave me a nasty case of perioral dermatitis. I had to see a GP to get an antibiotic gel to get rid of it. Strictly fragrance/active ingredient free now. I will have to accept the wrinkles!

The toner might have salicylic acid in it so you are probably overdoing it anyway. When you reintroduce it maybe just stick to a few times per week?

I’ve been using a salicylic acid face wash (different brands) for about 6 months, but the serum daily for about a month…

None in the toner, just the face wash and serum, which I guess may have been too much

Go back to basics and leave all actives out for a little while. I always found over doing it with salicylic acid brought me out in lots of tiny spots, once a week was enough. Try to repair your skin barrier but don't go wild on anything. Cleanse, tone, moisteriser with maybe a little drop of oil. Once your face has calmed down re add the acid 1x week
