Wedding guest outfit for October wedding.

I need some help please Mumsnet.
I've been invited to my partner's niece wedding and I am totally lost about what to wear. I've not been to a wedding in over ten years and no idea about dressing. It is a very smart wedding a posh country barn / house type place.

I've bought this but I'm not sure about the crossover part. Plus I can't wear heels and will need something for my arms.

But I also fancy a wide leg trousers and waistcoat with a shirt / blouse type look.

Like this with a deep pink satin blouse. Again flat shoes.

I'm size 20, 5'9" and neat 50.

I'd love some opinions please.
Also I have a tiny budget too!

Wide leg trouser and waistcoat is a good look but not that black one for an autumn wedding. Maybe green or burnt orange?

Incakewetrust · 21/09/2024 13:05

How about something like this? Xx

Wedding guest outfit for October wedding.

What’s your budget, @TheSparkling?

I’m not sure about the dress you’ve bought - it’s rather bridesmaid-y. And not really very seasonal - assuming the wedding is this autumn. I’d prefer something like this (maybe pre-owned or a less expensive version):

Reformation dress

worn with leather or suede accessories in autumnal colours.

A trouser suit is a perfectly good alternative, but maybe not a black and white striped City print in a barn?

TheSparkling · 21/09/2024 15:04

@MetaDaughter my budget is tiny really. £100 max for everything!
I like the dress you linked to though. But I'm not a natural dressed up person which is why I thought about a trouser suit / outfit. But then I'm not sure what's wedding appropriate either.
I also figured trousers would be worn again but the dress I've bought would not be. Which adds to my indecision.

I love the idea of suede accessories though. Would have to be a vinted purchase though as my budget won't stretch.

This suit:

https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/coats-jackets/wkndgirl-brown-tailored-oversized-suit-blazer/p/905563527

with a pink blouse would be more autumnal and more ‘country barn’. Could look very elegant with dressy accessories.

This dress:

ASOS

is a similar fabric to the one you have - but looks more up to date and vibrant and not at all spurned bridesmaid.

This one:

Never Fully Dressed

isn’t an ‘occasion’ piece, just a nice dress which you’d get plenty of wear out of over the coming season. Top end of your budget but might be worth it.

And this dress:

Nobody’s Child

must have been recommended on a hundred S&B threads - but really it’s fairly perfect. It’s frustrating that most of the higher end ASOS offerings seem to involve tulle and ruffles, making them useless for everyday life. This, by contrast, can be dressed up for the wedding and then worn with boots, coat and scarf all through autumn.

@Frosty1000 oooh I really like that dress. Unfortunately sold out in my size but there are a couple of similar dresses that I like on that website.
What is the quality like ?
How are you styling it @Frosty1000 ?

@MetaDaughter - sorry I can't get any of those 3 links to work.

Don't know your colouring but you could dress up something like this pretty successfully.

Oh - don’t know why? They’re working on my phone.

I was pleasantly surprised actually about the quality - it looks like it costs more than it did. It's actually very forgiving size wise a it has a stretchy waist so hides everything. I'm an 18/20 with a tummy and I fit the 18 easily. I have the m&s shapewear slip to even the bumps.

I'm just wearing nude flats with it so nothing fancy.

If you’re looking for reasonably priced dresses, you could look at the Jolie Moi sale. I’ve just put up a few examples. Most of JM dresses have elastane in them and many have pockets in the skirt.

This one is probably the closest to the one you like colour wise. https://joliemoi.co.uk/collections/under-60/products/maab-mesh-ruffle-sleeve-midi-dress-2?_pos=35&_fid=0d0260c34&_ss=c&variant=42694829736134

Animal print is quite fashionable this year. https://joliemoi.co.uk/collections/under-60/products/pre-order-stand-collar-v-neck-maxi-dress-pink-animal?_pos=88&_fid=0d0260c34&_ss=c&variant=42550681764038

I have this dress in a size 20 for a few years now. Just fyi. Possibly not your vibe. But the quality is pretty good even if paying full price and I’ve worn / washed it loads. https://joliemoi.co.uk/collections/sale-under-30/products/jolie-moi-chloe-high-neck-tie-front-maxi-dress-black-multi?_pos=20&_fid=c499a20da&_ss=c&variant=42550718890182

They are also doing wool knee length coats for £50. This is in your size in burgundy or black. https://joliemoi.co.uk/products/jolie-moi-kate-fit-flare-midi-coat-burgundy?_pos=1&_sid=ab6efc5bd&_ss=r&_fid=d4afc478e&variant=42535765541062 I’d buy something like one of these dresses as they’re cheap id you’re not going to wear it again and then try and get a jacket, clutch and shoes in the sale or possibly buy one of the coats if you’ll wear again…

The Next sale is often pretty good. It’s been stripped bare atm as it’s been going on for a few days but things do come back into stock so you can check back and I often find midweek better than the weekend.

Stand Collar V Neck Print Maxi Dress, Pink Animal

Fashioned with an animal print throughout, the soft jersey fabric with added stretch makes for long-lasting comfort without compromising on style. With a nod to retro fashion, the gathered detail at the puffed sleeves and ruffles at the neckline comple...

That first one looks like it would be perfect for an October wedding, good find! Apparently burgundy is ’the’ colour this season too - OP I think that’s a great option. You could pick one of the colours from the pattern to accessorise with.

Thank you to everyone - I feel like I have found something a bit more me and practical too. x
