Penelope Chilvers vs Fairfax and Favour vs something else?

Anyone know the differences or have another brand to recommend? Looking for a pair of water resistant boots in that tassel style that will last a decade 😂

I have F&F and also Spanish Boot Company boots. Personally, I find the F&F softer on the footbed so more comfortable however, if you happen to be an awkward size for standard boots SBC will do made to measure.

TheGirlattheBack · 20/09/2024 16:52

Mine are from Really Wild London.

Petrine · 20/09/2024 20:03

I have the Penelope Chilvers long tassel boots. I’ve had them years and wear them a lot. I’m sure you’d get a decade’s use from them easily. I think they look better the older they get too.

WandsOut · 22/09/2024 08:49

@Petrine what do you wear them with? Are they warm? Do the souls have a bit of cushioning and bounce?
So many questions!

Fairfax have gone down the country chav look now, similar to Holland Cooper. I used to love them but prefer Penelope Chilvers now
County shows are full of Fairfax and it just looks ridiculous because the people who generally wear them have never set foot on a stable yard or farm!

‘Country chav look’ Wow. You are not showing much breeding yourself with comments like that.

Penelope Chilvers vote from me

WildFlowerBees · 22/09/2024 16:01

I've got the Fairfax explorers which are really warm and currently covered in mud from the yard and a pair of the PC boots similar to the explorers, not as warm but very comfortable. Also covered in yard mud. I'd say my Explorers are a bit more hardy but I've had mine years the newer ones I don't believe are as well made and people have had issues with the soles coming away. For that reason I'd now choose PC boots.

Justonedayatatime11 · 23/09/2024 08:25

Original style Explorers if you can find a pair second hand, don't bother with the new version. They're hideous, shiny, and look like plastic.

Penelope Chilvers inclement boots are equally as nice, but not as comfortable I find

LaurieFairyCake · 23/09/2024 10:12

I've got the Penelope Chilvers black suede riding boots.

I've not been able to get on with them as they're too heavy for me. They're very sturdy.

I'm going to try them on again and then I will sell them on eBay. Bit gutted as they look amazing

WandsOut · 23/09/2024 14:41

How do people manage suede boots in the rain etc?

No cushioning and bounce and they’re quite heavy too but, despite this, they’re comfortable and the leather is fantastic quality.

I wear them with skinny jeans or thick leggings tucked in. When I rode I wore them with riding breeches.

@WandsOut I have F&F Explorers - just a word of warning, I have used F&F products on them and followed to the letter their looking after guide, but they suddenly started letting water in, no warning of slightly damp feet, just large amounts of water which I had to pour out!

F&F answered the emails I sent very quickly but basically said, oh you likely need new soles which you will need to pay for. I didn't expect a replacement pair as outside of the original warranty but I was surprised as the acceptance that their hardly used waterproof boots are no longer waterproof.

The boots are so wet inside, I am not sure if they will ever dry, or begin to smell better to make it worth spending a 3 figure sum getting new soles, in addition to not knowing if the problem will be solved.

WandsOut · 29/09/2024 20:40

That's a terrible bit of customer service from them @schloss - and has put me off them. They are supposed to be an investment boot!

Such a shame from F&F as they are otherwise comfortable and lovely boots. I would get them repaired but my concern is the same will happen again, so I will most likely put the money towards another make of boots - just got to find which make to go for.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 29/09/2024 20:55

I’ve got a pair of the original F&F Explorers. I can wear them all day, they’re so soft and light and comfy. They’re still waterproof and I’ve had them for years. Not had a pair of the newer style but I think they look nice.

They’re not just for stable yards or farms, by the way. I used to go shooting in mine and I wear them for walking the dogs across the fields. They’re also smart enough, when cleaned of mud, to wear into town. I wouldn’t class myself as a country chav, either. I believe Valverde Botas, as mentioned above, still make them in the old style.

RitzyMcFee · 29/09/2024 20:58

I've got some PC inclement boots and I almost fainted with the comfort when I first tried them on.

Buildingthefuture · 29/09/2024 21:03

I would avoid Penelope Chilvers. I have had a couple of pairs over the last 10 years and they’ve been great, so last Christmas I bought myself a new pair. Very, very similar to my others but a literal world apart in terms of quality. These are knee high and, unlike my old pair, they aren’t even lined so they don’t stay up, they just drop down and bunch up around my ankles. The stitching looks like I did it and the sole is not good quality. For £400 you can do better, it’s such a shame because they used to be great. F&F are better I think.

RitzyMcFee · 29/09/2024 21:18

Mine are definitely lined. Possibly with angels wings.

toooldforbrat · 29/09/2024 21:31

I have these - now coming out for their 4th winter. Good quality & comfortable

I am not sure Princess Kate likes being referred to as a CHAV considering she wears quite a lot of Holland Cooper clothing. It sounds like sour grapes maybe you could save a little harder to afford the clothing.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 24/01/2025 17:25

Le Chameau do a waterproof leather boot, which I have found to be excellent and far more hardly than most.

I think you are addressing the wrong poster. It was @twistyizzy who was calling a look "country chav".
