Fashion for thunder thighs

I'm in my forties, size 16, smallish waist, but the most enormous thunder thighs. I've been told my whole life I have man's legs. I am desperate for some new trousers and see all sorts of lovely ones I'd like to try like to try, but everything looks terrible. I don't want skirts and dresses as they simply aren't practical all the time in real life. Some women have lovely shapely bottom halves in bigger sizes, but not in my case. Please please give me some advice. I just want to look vaguely fashionable again, and it's really getting me down.

Some great tips thank you. I guess I'm looking for links to actual things that would look good. I've tried the wider leg trousers - I love them but I look so squat

It's counter intuitive, but barrel legged trousers are great. You might need to shop around to find the right pair as they need to barrel and then narrow at the right bit. I make my own now.

Thunderlegs · 19/09/2024 19:56

I'll give them a try. Are you taking orders?!

I am the same shape and size as you. Agree, barrel leg are brilliant, but hard to find. Sainsbury's surprisingly do a lot of this style.

Thunderlegs · 19/09/2024 20:27

I've been googling and found a couple from Sainsbury's. Will definitely give them a whirl!

Are these from Zara the wrong idea? https://www.zara.com/uk/en/trf-mid-rise-baggy-balloon-jeans-p08197245.html?v1=398350399

Have you looked at Abercrombie’s “curve love” range, OP? I’m a smaller size but have a big arse/thighs and a small waist, which this is cut especially for. I kept seeing this on TikTok and ordered some jeans last week which came very quickly. I found the size guide a bit of a mystery (it’s US sizing but doesn’t seem to convert like the usual US/UK sizing) so I needed to return and get a smaller size, but I am really pleased with the final pair. They have a barrel leg style if you fancy that.

BananaSpanner · 19/09/2024 21:31

I also have big thighs and a small waist. I suit the wide leg look similar to those Zara jeans. It was a good look in mild weather but now it’s getting colder, am struggling with what coat to wear with them that doesn’t take all my shape away.

By the way, who are all these people telling you you have man’s legs. Tell them to piss off!

dudsville · 19/09/2024 21:40

I think that link is aimed at those who want to hide this part of their body, I don't know if you feel that way too OP? I have strong legs, they're not delicate, but they are curvy. I have a waist 10 inches smaller than my hips and my thighs are thick. I'm loving barrel and wide leg stuff. I don't have links to offer as I shop one place and only in a sale, so it's no longer available, but those zara jeans look perfect!

Chocolateteabag · 22/09/2024 08:15

I hear you OP - and coming on to recommend Primark jeans - they have some barrel jeans in at the moment which I kept over the Mango version!
I wanted to try the Abercrombie ones but my size keeps flitting out of stock

I've also got a pair of baggier jeans from Primark which also just "work" - that was from a "pop in and just try" several pairs in various sizes

I was going to say this too, they are flattering.

Lucy and Yak Addison trousers are so great for larger hips and thighs with smaller waists. Choose the size based on your waist size or bigger as the waist is very fitted with no give. They have a glorious amount of hip, bum and thigh space before tapering a bit into a neater ankle that rolls up nicely.

Also mans legs? Wtf? Ignore those people. Men often have really skinny legs in my experience! It's not the 90s / 00s any more thank fuck. There is growing recognition that women come in a variety of shapes.

Those L&Y trousers above are obviously a very bold choice, but they do the same style in plain neutral colours, denim washes etc. I have the leopard print ones (okay not everyone’s cup of tea!) and they are great. I also used to have the black Alexa trousers which were a super fit and really comfy but attracted so much cat hair I eventually gave up and got rid of them. (They are just regular black trousers, no wacky print.)

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 22/09/2024 10:31

I do agree about L&Y, I find their clothing range weirdly toddler-like. But each to their own.

M&S do a barrel jean called Carrot which are pretty great.

OuterSpaceCadet · 22/09/2024 14:37

I have the Lucy and yaks in a bold pattern and in a very sober dark green. The latter can be made to look smart. They're thick, 100% cotton.

The current models used on their website don't really do the fit of these particular trousers justice; they look very baggy because they fit at the waist only. For pear shapes and hourglasses whose waists are proportionally smaller regardless of clothing size, this style ends up looking much more fitted.
