Very very dry scalp

Looking for advice please.
I have an extremely dry scalp, and it's both itchy and irritating. I wash my hair every day, as if I don't, my scalp gets very uncomfortable. I find myself scratching at the itchy tight skin, and great big bits (pinky nail sized) start to peel off, so I end up picking at it compulsively. It's kind of become a habit. I wear a ponytail most of the time to stop my hands getting in there.
I've tried various dry scalp shampoos and treatments, and am currently using a salicylic acid scalp treatment once a week pre wash, then using a scalp moisturiser afterwards. I'm at a loss as I've no idea of I'm doing too much or too little. It seems like a stupid thing to go to the docs about. I wake up clawing at my head, its so tight and itchy. It's just the back of my head that's affected, and I'm sick of it.
I'd be very grateful for any advice, if anyone has had something similar.

If it's eczema - sounds like it might be - you'll need a steroid scalp treatment - you need the docs for that.

I get it from time to time - it's deffo worth a try

My scalp used to be like this. I think you're doing too much! I had to break the cycle of daily washing because although it felt better for a while it was actually drying it out more. I use body shop ginger shampoo now and was 2-3 times a week.

I would go to the GP, you may need betnovate to help clear it up.

Sympathies though, it's horrible.

I got this from dry shampoo, stopped using it and it went away, sadly I now have to wash my hair every day. I used tea tree shampoo and conditioner for a couple of weeks and it cleared up completely

Sounds like a DR job if you are picking layers of skin off as it will become at risk of infection.

Betnovate liquid, ask your GP

Sounds like you have scalp psoriasis. Go to the doc and suggest this, steroid lotion keeps mine under control.

I was using dry shampoo to reduce my washes to every 2 days, but my scalp hated it. Washing every day is non negotiable, my hair is fine but greasy and my scalp feels absolutely disgusting if I don't wash it daily.
I do get eczema so perhaps you're right, I need to see the doc. Bugger. It'd be easier to catch a flight to the moon. Our GPS are crap.

Perhaps try the pharmacist if you can't get a GP appointment.

I use Herbal Essence daily and find that mild but if you haven't already tried it baby shampoo might be a better option so that you don't irritate the skin further.
