Winter shoes for 10 year old boy

What do you DC wear in the winter (out of school)? DS only wants to wear trainers, but in the winter when it's cold and muddy I don't think they'll work too well.

Hi I’m posting here to join in - I just posted the exact thread elsewhere but for school.
Someone kindly suggested leather trainers but I’m not sure where to get those, will google.
All ideas welcome / ideally looking for a warm fine boot that he could still play football in

So ds now 12 and beyond there size range had a pair of these each winter for a number of years in a row as well as trainers

We ended up getting these https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/kids'-waterproof-lace-up-hiking-shoes-crossrock-uk-size-2-5-5-blue/_/R-p-192075. I think they are a cross between a trainer and a walking shoe. Main thing is that they are waterproof!
