If you had my eyes, how would you do your makeup?

After many years of wondering why my eye makeup always looks rubbish when the rest of my face looks fine, I have finally realised I have quite an uncooperative eye shape (pic attached).

They are:

  • a bit hooded, though not fully;
  • sort of rectangular shaped;
  • downturned;
  • heavy-lidded, so that the upper lid comes well over the lower, which means I can't draw lines out etc;
  • very short on space, almost touching my brows.

YouTube is quite good for some of these, but not others. So if you'd been blessed with my eyes, how would you make them up? ("Not bother" is a very acceptable answer).

I describe my eye shape similarly to you, I colour in the roots of my upper lashes , and then use eye lash curlers then apply mascara . I use concealer on my lids instead of mascara.
I wear a bolder lipstick.

Because you look fair, a lash lift and tint, maybe even your eyebrows shaped and tinted too.

Thanks @Mairzydotes. I'm actually quite pleased that elaborate eyeshadow looks are not really possible, it's one less thing to think about! You are right that my eyelashes and brows are close to invisible, so I think a tint/shape etc would go a long way.

Mascara and a coloured eyeliner - purple, green or brown. No need for shadow with hooded lids.

cloudsss · 04/09/2024 21:36

I would second the lash shape and perhaps tint. I think it will define your brows and also give a bit more space between your eyelid and brow. I find threading is really good for a natural shape and look.

PinkArt · 04/09/2024 22:05

My lashes and brows are darker but otherwise my eyes are quite like yours.
My regular look is a fine line of liquid eyeliner on the top with two coats of a curling or lifting mascara, also just on the top. I learned a long time ago to let any hope of lovely flicked eyeliner go - it just doesn't work with hooded eyes.
As you say, elaborate eyeshadow feels pointless but I do like a one colour smudge of something like the By Terry sticks.

Thanks everyone. I'll certainly need to work on my eyeliner technique, but I can't say I'll be sorry to see the back of eyeshadow blending.

FWIW I think your eyes are beautiful. They are large, a lovely colour and really not very hooded.

I can only apologise. I am drunk.

Have a look on YouTube for Angelina Jolie eye makeup tutorials. It might be interesting to play around with makeup that makes your eyes look more upturned in the corners.
As for colours, avoid black. Try mascara in dark brown.

Bearpawk · 07/09/2024 04:51

Your eyes aren't very hooded imo (mine are and you can't see my lid)

It's your eyebrows that are rather downturned. I'd be subtly plucking a bit more from the outside bottom, brush them upwards and fill them in from the top using a light ashy brow pen. Maybe a bit of highlighter under brows too.

stayathomer · 07/09/2024 05:01

Another that doesn’t think they’re too hooded! I’d say eyebrows shaped a little, a nice eyeshadow and a lengthening mascara. You’ve lovely eyes!

I have down turned eyes too. Eyeliner on the top only makes a huge difference. If I wear it on the bottom I look so sad. Can be thin liner or chunky thick slightly smudged.

I kind of love this.

This is lovely, I like the way she's created an arch when there doesn't look to be much of one naturally.

Might head out to Superdrug later, anyone got any mascara recommendations? (Inexpensive, unfortunately).

Yes! Soap and Glory's thick and fast mascara!

It's a tubing mascara (stays put and then comes off with warm water), pretty cheap, and imo much better than the more expensive brands of the same thing.

Thanks to whoever on s&b first recommended it.

Edit to add, dunno if only available at boots though?

If you are on Instagram please follow Erica Taylor, her tops for hooded eyes have been game changing for me and I've mastered the eye liner xx
