Inspiration for wedding guest dress

ViaRia01 · 02/09/2024 19:49

I have been invited to a wedding at the end of September and I am on the hunt for a new dress.

I’ve lost my sense of personal style since having children so I’m really not sure what shops to try or what style of dress.

I would previously have found something I loved in phase eight and felt great in it. A nice dressy, floral, colourful dress with a quite classic style.

Old clothes no longer fit. Now that I’m heading to late 30’s I feel more conscious than I used to about dressing frumpy, or boring or ‘safe’ and that’s kind of how I feel now when I look at some of those dresses from phase eight etc.

so…. Any inspiration welcome for more modern but age-appropriate styles for a formal wedding at a Manor House?

Budget? Size? Colours preferred? Patterned or plainer?
Sleeves?
Skirt length?
Open to suggestions like jumpsuit? (People looooove to suggest a jumpsuit!)

Ah yes I did mean to add: Size 14.
Id usually expect to spend £140-200.

As for the rest, that’s what I’m looking for inspiration on!

This type of thing?

Realisation Par silk dress. Could be gorgeous with a properly oversize jacket and the sort of Chanel-alike flats shown in the third photo. Obviously plenty of other choices on the site.

Or this?

Sister Jane dress

Or this?

The Loom Art pure silk dress

Or this?

Weekend MaxMara dress

Afraid I don’t subscribe to the ‘age appropriate’ term. Surely you wear what suits you and seems appropriate for the occasion?

heldinadream · 02/09/2024 22:08

Oops I asked you all those questions and then disappeared, so sorry, had a late Ocado order arriving in dark and rain.

I will come back tomorrow and find some things.

That Loom Art dress is beautiful @CapaciousHag!

ViaRia01 · 03/09/2024 05:45

Thanks @CapaciousHag - really interesting as I wouldn’t really have considered any of those suitable for a wedding but I’m thinking my view has been quite limited so it’s great to see these other ideas.

would be open to something like an oversized collar, or big statement sleeves.

Collar?

Batsheva green

Sleeves?

Batsheva pink

Really, just explore some new to you websites and find something you fall in love with and would feel excited to wear.

Or, of course, you could hire - particularly if you’d like to try something way above your purchasing budget.

Were any of people's suggestions any good @ViaRia01 ?

ViaRia01 · 10/09/2024 20:43

@heldinadream sorry, dropped off the face of the earth.
I do really appreciate the replies. But, no, not really. They just look a bit too odd to me. And some seem too casual imo for a wedding. But I asked for different options to the usual floral cocktail dresses I usually wear and lots of suggestions came in so I have at least had a different perspective and a chance to consider other styles

I also like the Ghost Grace dress, although I’ve heard tell of it being used as a bridesmaid’s dress at posh weddings.

John Lewis has the sage in an M, and also navy in an L.
