What coat goes with a maxi dress in winter?

Just that really. I've bought 3 maxi shirt dresses but don't know what coat to wear with them. My denim jacket looks good but won't work when it gets colder. Any ideas?

Do they have a belted waist ?
I'd say either a leather jacket (layer up with a thermal vest under the dress) or a very wool coat (needs to be almost as long as the dress)

Yes, they've all got belted waists. It's the length of coat I'm struggling with. I think denim/leather jacket length works but I'd like something warmer.

Buy a maxi coat.

I think only short jackets work with long dresses. I wear a cord/sheepskin type thick jacket to the waist, long skirt or dress, and more substantial boots. With tights on this is usually warm enough for me. Denim jacket won't be warm enough past mid-Oct I wouldn't find, although my other trick is to wear long sleeved thermal vests underneath (M & S ones) and tights, and that plus a long dress and chunky shorter jacket might be enough for some of the winter.

I don't like maxi coats with maxi dresses. I like maxi coats with short dresses and short coats with maxi dresses! Midi you can have both coats/dresses and it doesn't look too odd!

I agree with short jackets for long dresses. Back in the day when I used to go out out I used to wear a black leather jacket with a thin black fleece under it for nights out. Thick tights under the dress, pair of boots, bob's your uncle.

I wear yoga leggings under dresses/skirts if they are long/loose enough. With boots and warm socks. Then possible to get away with jacket. But probably not in depths of winter. Then I wear a long long coat.

Thankyou, great ideas. I'll look at a cord jacket and some thermals, sounds like layering is the way to go.

The one I have has fleece/fake sheepskin lining, leather with a similar lining can also be picked up on Vinted. It's not for the depths of winter though if it's a cotton maxi dress.

It is the obvious answer. Although any coat here.
