I read a beauty magazine in the salon today

I think there was a handbag tag in there for a couple of hundred quid.

Really?

How is this supposed to be accessible? I get the whole saving up for a designer bag thing, but a decorative handbag tag??

And trousers for a few hundred pounds. How am I supposed to afford a holiday if I spend all my money on summer clothes??

Absolutely crazy prices, and no budget stuff to balance it out. Who exactly are these magazines targeting?

People with more money than you?

ItsMeMaria · 31/08/2024 20:47

I don't actually think they are necessarily targeting people with a lot of money....people buy those magazines as they are aspirational. Not everyone reading them is able to afford the higher end stuff they recommend in there

Thing is, we are not badly off ourselves.

I suppose it is aspirational.

But I have to say, magazines used to include high street stuff and these ones did not. Not a fan.

Maybe because not every magazine is written to personally appeal to you, OP? Not everything needs to be accessible. Some people have more disposable income than you, it’s a fact of life. Taking offence at this is ridiculous.

musicalfrog · 31/08/2024 20:53

Not offended just perplexed!

It isn't. Not everything has to be, or aims to be. Plenty of brands actively aim to be inaccessible.

Last time I read one in the salon I thought the same as you. I remember they had a sideboard for about £3000. I suppose these fancy brands have to advertise somewhere.

musicalfrog · 31/08/2024 20:57

Ok let me put it this way. Having looked at the magazine, (which I was interested in btw), I would not buy it.

Some brands are of course deliberately inaccessible. I just thought a consumer magazine might have a bit more variety included for a wider audience.

I subscribe to Vogue because I like looking at beautiful things. It’s very fashion forward so it helps me get my eye in on the kind of looks that will hit the high street in diluted form a couple of seasons hence.

In my opinion a beauty salon is a place of escapism. I like to peruse fancy magazines and get a taste of the aspirational high life (which I definitely do not have) for an hour or two. A girl can dream!

musicalfrog · 31/08/2024 21:01

Haha I'm deducing from the replies that I am not the aspirational type! Although I did like/want some of the stuff in there 😂

I just like reading about how the other half lives TBH.
Besides most of the wearable trends will have countless dupes on the high st so I can always find something similar.
