Rooftop bar, mid 40s... what are you wearing?

As the title says. You're going out. Mid forties to a city rooftop bar. Weekend night.

What are you wearing?

For context - I'm very short, squishier than i used to be and more of a jeans and trainers person than cashmere and heels.

Jeans, T-shirt and trainers (mid forties too and no longer care what anyone thinks about what I’m wearing as long as I’m happy and comfortable).

Doggymummar · 29/08/2024 19:29

My Zara hoody skinny jeans and trainers, probs superga

Dearg · 29/08/2024 19:33

Raincoat and wellies. Scotland.

in my dreams I am in Rome; my skin has gone a lovely pale bronze ( I.e. the freckles have joined up) ; I am 2 inches taller and 4 inches narrower; I am wearing a strappy yet modest black midi length, slightly-clingy-but-not-bodycon black dress, which in no way looks odd with my red hair, white skin and occasional freckle. The moon is full and the night is warm

stardust777 · 29/08/2024 19:34

Love these linen trousers, very comfy and look nice:

Arket trousers

and then probably some layers - vest top and cardigan (maybe a scarf depending on the weather). Drop earrings and nice flats.

I'm early 40s.

BellesAndGraces · 29/08/2024 19:36

I’m wearing black barrel cut jeans, a good quality white tee (perhaps a band t shirt) and silver flat pumps. I’m well accessorised with jewellery, a soft silver clutch, sunglasses for the sunset, straightened hair, red nails, a red lip and a few sprits of either Lady Million or wonderland peony by Floral Street.

Hoolihan · 29/08/2024 19:41

Depends on weather but most probably wide leg jeans, a silky black shirt, black leather belt with gold buckle, mid-heel black boots, gold hoop earrings, gold bangle, black bag with gold hardware.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/08/2024 19:47

Slightly older than you op. I’d likely go for wide leg jeans, heeled boots, slogan tee and leather jacket. Or, if in a different mood and/or if it’s warmer (also Scotland, so unlikely), I’d do knee high boots with mini dress.

TheOGCCL · 29/08/2024 19:51

I was at a roof top bar last Friday. I wore straight-ish jeans, a cropped shirt, gold sandals and a Chanel style jacket as I get cold v easily, worn over my shoulders to start with.

StormingNorman · 29/08/2024 19:54

Classic blue Levi’s.
Loose fitting shirt with a deep V (black/white/ivory).
Wedge espadrilles if sunny.
Slouchy oversize clutch tucked under my arm.
Big sunglasses if it’s still light out.
Scruffy bun & colourful Kiki McDonough earrings.

If I needed to be dressier I’d coordinate my handbag with a bright pair of chunky 70s platforms or LK Bennet Fern heels.

If I needed to be more casual, I’d wear trainers and a jumper over my shoulders.

Weather? Vital to my answer!

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 29/08/2024 19:59

Jeans and a nice top, babes. Goes without saying.

SpanielPaws · 29/08/2024 20:01

Jeans, nice top, nice bag/boots and a decent cardigan/wrap to keep warm.

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 29/08/2024 20:05

Maxi dress and denim jacket.

This was me last weekend. But I am 5’8”. I wore a dress very similar to this, with heels.

Of the people I was with, there were trousers with silky top, one was dressed modestly, and a couple of dresses. No jeans.

Oh wow!! So many great ideas. Thank you so much. I will look through all of these!

Scotland too so it's interesting that a couple of people mentioned weather Smile

I was at a rooftop bar in Scotland on a rare day when the weather was nice recently. I wore a one shoulder midi dress with Hermes dupe sandals, gold cuff and gold teardrop earrings.

There was a massive variation. I would say most 40 somethings were wearing midi/maxi dresses with trainers.

FjordFancier · 29/08/2024 21:21

Variation on what I always wear when going out! All Saints black slip dress, white heeled ankle boots and a neutral Joseph cashmere jumper worn over the shoulders until it gets chilly enough to put on. Kenyan straw bucket and a couple of thick silver bsmgjes.

SausageRoll2020 · 29/08/2024 21:27

Might be worthwhile checking the dress code. There's a rooftop bar/restaurant near me where clothes like jeans and trainers go against the dress code and you wouldn't be allowed in if wearing them.

henlake7 · 29/08/2024 21:54

I'd go black wide legged trousers, pussy bow blouse and either ballet flats or boots depending on weather. Probably chuck on my biker jacket if it was chilly.
(Full disclosure though, I have no idea what people wear for drinks;).

CitronellaDeVille · 30/08/2024 07:53

Jeans, a little boxy v necked patterned blouse, biker jacket (M&S have v reasonable faux leather ones but the All Saints ones are fab)

Or dress, biker jacket.

lToodles · 30/08/2024 08:04

Thank you all so much! This is so helpful

I went to a wine bar garden last night. I wore some silky green barrel leg trouser things (They’re Beyond Nine ones, like clown trousers but in the cupro material they’re drapey rather than Ronald McDonald), a cropped white tshirt from Reiss, a couple of chunky gold necklaces and gold flip flops because I hate proper shoes. I put a navy blazer on top for smartness and rolled the sleeves up because it looks a bit ‘Welcome to NatWest’’ otherwise

LoobyDoop2 · 31/08/2024 12:29

Probably either jeans or wide legged trousers, a silk top and a jacket. Either pointy flats, ballet pumps or trainers depending on whether I felt over- or under-dressed once I’d put everything else on.

It’s interesting that a few people have said wide legged jeans. I love mine in the daytime but they feel too casual for evening, and I stick to turned-up straight legs.
