I probably fit your description, and I love these. I don't think they're unflattering. Actually I find a fitted top and wide leg trousers loons good.

I just realised I put hourglass with big lower half. Not sure if that doesn't make me hourglass? What I meant was that I've got a relatively narrower waist (need to lose a few pounds overall)

Is it a big no-no to not have tucked in or no crop?

You need to careful of the cut and fabric, and the top you choose. Some wide trousers make me look very unbalanced and blocky, but some are very flattering.
Those Halara ones look promising.

I am a similar age and shape and I have a few pairs.
The ones I have look good (I think) but I have tried on plenty that don't and I am not sure what makes the difference

My DD has just bought these. She weight trains, so has a big bum/thighs and is also short. She is very slim though. They look fabulous on. They have a slight bit of elastic in the waist too, and come in lengths, bliss. She got 25/short.
