Can I wear trousers? (pretty please) Smart nice black ones? Or do I have to wear a dress?

Seeing myself in a dress makes me want to leap off a bridge, when I'm all clad in the same fabric all over I can see exactly how lardy I am and it's depressing.

It's a funny time of year for frocks too.

Are you aiming to impress anyone or are you going to enjoy yourself? If the former, find out what the expected dress code is, if the latter, wear whatever you feel good wearing.

Thank you both.

Not out to impress, although I don't know 2 of the 4 in our party. All women and wealthy Ladies Who Lunch, if the friend who is taking me is anything to go by.

Friend is wearing a dress, I asked and felt like a teenager social death beckons!

I can do very dressed up summery (think Glyndebourne) or not too dressed up wintery but have very little in between.

I think I will go for a heavy silk multicouloured (mostly petrol blue with thin stripes) calf length skirt with a creamy fluffy wrap cardi and a petrol blue velvet fitted jacket.

Your outfit sounds gorgeous. Wear it with confidence, and enjoy yourself
