Is this dress ok for a funeral?

Yessiryessir3bagsfull · 26/08/2024 19:41

Does this dress look ok/smart enough for a funeral (with black heels obviously not the sandals and bag!). I can’t find other dresses that suit me especially with postpartum baby weight and belly but worried it’s a bit too casual. Thanks

You might want to see it in real life, Matalan can be amazing or terrible.
But tbh as long as you are clean and smart (and a sombre colour) in don't think it matters too much nowadays x

Agree.

It looks fine but if it’s very cheap maybe buy a size up so it will drape more elegantly. And it looks a bit see through so you may want a slip. (Emm and Ess do them).

Also you really don’t have to wear ‘heels’. Loafers, brogues, boots would all be perfectly smart.

If you can afford to spend more you might find something suitable at Beyond Nine, like this, for instance:

Black dress

(Scroll though all the photos.)

Winnie Dress - Black

Much loved Winnie is now here in classic black. Beautifully cut, with a flexible fit, thanks to the wrap (which also allows easy access for breastfeeding), this dress works brilliantly with and without bump. With our take on the balloon sleeve, elastic...

Thanks all, it is a bit see through and I couldn’t get a slip to work with it (either too long or too short which defeated the point - it’s a linen type material so where light goes through one layer at the bottom you can see the outline of your legs. Can I get away with that, or any other way to block it being see through without sewing

That’s gorgeous but will be way too clingy 🤦‍♀️ I originally wanted this https://www.next.co.uk/style/LS352985/K35610?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADm_5UX4OeXOV_5qhRCFUDPOd6Rc6&gclid=Cj0KCQjwz7C2BhDkARIsAA_SZKaw3mrTHflAhEcW_fF9PVrsYifXW5KD7eUsudw9WH5eZB72oQzzAUAaAiHAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#K35610 but even 3 sizes up it cling too much to my tummy

I think your first dress is absolutely fine. It's neat and tidy and not 'flashy'.

I don't have a issue with your first choice, with you being unsure I was trying to give you another option x

@Yessiryessir3bagsfull it will be absolutely fine, sorry for your loss, you are going for someone you care about , that's all that matters x

Fink · 26/08/2024 22:08

It's fine. I work in a church and go to a lot of funerals. Pretty much anything that's plain black and doesn't show too much flesh (very low cut, short, cut out back etc.) passes without comment.

LouLou198 · 26/08/2024 22:56

Looks fine to me op. I would probably wear with some opaque black tights and heels. Sorry for your loss Flowers

Thank you, would nude tights be appropriate too?

Emm & Ess?

It's fine op, no one will care on the day.

JC03745 · 26/08/2024 23:31

I'm sorry for your loss OP. I'm in a similar position and waiting on some M&S things to be delivered. Generally, I would go smarter that your first choice and wear a jacket. If the funeral is soon though, I'm unsure what the weather would be like and a jacket might be too hot.

Emm & Ess?

It's fine op, no one will care on the day.

While it may or may not be true that other people won’t care what one is wearing, people come to this board because they want the confidence and reassurance of feeling they’ve made (or that it is possible to make) the right choice. Which can be strengthening at times of stress when everything else may seem beyond one’s control.

Telling someone that their appearance won’t matter just leaves them floundering.

(And, while we don’t know how close the OP was to the person whose funeral she is attending, those at the centre of the mourning can feel irrationally upset if an attendee appears, through their choice of clothing, to be in some way disrespectful towards the deceased or those left behind. In short, it actually can matter.)

redtrain123 · 27/08/2024 00:23

First dress is fine, and nude tights will be fine also.
sorry fir your loss .

Durdledore · 27/08/2024 00:27

Since see through and slip doesn’t work - another idea is wide leg black linen trousers with it.

Durdledore · 27/08/2024 00:28

Actually, scrap that - I forgot it’s pulled in so much at the back. I imagined a more unstructured fit from looking for too long at just the image of the front.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 27/08/2024 00:37

It's fine - just wear a long line dark coloured cardigan over the top if you are worried about it being a bit see-through.
And you don't need to wear heels either . I would probably wear black tights - but nude colour ones would be fine too (I've just never worn them). I've gone to funerals where it's been warm before and worn a longer length skirt with bare legs and sandals .

avignon1234 · 27/08/2024 00:51

aww xxx Is there someone you can ask? Have just been at my MIL funeral, and the ask was "come as you are. Preferably in bright and floral". Wore my brightest, daughters did the same. So many people did not, and so a bit odd when we went in looking like we were going for a day at the races, and everyone in black and grey, but knew she would have preferred it. x

LouLou198 · 27/08/2024 06:51

Yes nude tights would be fine also. I just always go opaque because I hate my legs!

Try a slip from M&S, they come in several different lengths & colours. I've got a few short & full length ones for skirts & dresses.

I had a dress that was slightly see through and I bought a sleeveless bodycon dress to wear under it.
