Navel piercings - are they a complete pain?

Not looking for opinions on the aesthetics - I might be old enough to know better but I'm also old enough not to care😆

But, if you have one, especially if you already had kids when you had it done, how easy was it to heal? I've wanted one for ages but I don't want to be terrified that it will get snagged every time the kids climb up for a cuddle!

I’m in my 40s, so old enough to have fun too. Unfortunately, my body rejected my naval piercing twice so l gave up on that one. The actual piercings were fairly painless after the initial entry with the needle. I looked after it but sadly my body thought otherwise.

l had my nose pierced this year with no problems at all. That made me brave again , so now considering having my nipples done, but one at a time allowing the first time to heal and then I’ll think again.

l think you might get better guidance if you post on the Tattoo thread. That covers piercings as well. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/tattoos

lt has a smaller following than S&B, but the lovely people there know a lot.

I have many piercings including bellybutton and mines has always been absolutely fine! Go for it!

autumn1610 · 22/08/2024 18:27

I had no end of trouble with mine, had it when I was 16 and it never really healed I probably gave up after 10 years or so, as never settled properly. I have a scar now

TaraT28 · 22/08/2024 21:35

Most women I know who have had then ended up with infections at some stage. Not for me.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 22/08/2024 22:04

Mine healed fine, no infections. However about 4 years later I caught it on the edge of a massive buckle that was part of some trousers I used to wear, and the top corner of the buckle hooked under the ball of the piercing whilst I was crouched down. I hadn't realised and as soon as I stood up it ripped partially out. I took it out for a while to help the tear heal but by the time it came to putting it back in I couldn't get it back in again. It's fully healed now but I have a scar on my bellybutton. I'd love to have it re pierced again but I'm way too fat to get it done now. I'd never see the bloody thing from all the belly fat 😅

SerafinasGoose · 22/08/2024 22:12

Had mine years. It's never given me any problems at all and I used a retainer when pregnant. Still have it to this day.

I had two inverse piercings too but they unfortunately didn't survive the pregnancy. They migrated too far upwards and are now too short and shallow to accommodate a bar.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 22/08/2024 22:14

Mine was fine. I only removed it recently due to surgery but the way they stitched me meant I now can't put it back in.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/08/2024 22:15

Well Nelson never made a fuss about his.

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/08/2024 22:18

I had one about 20 years ago. It healed absolutely fine. I cleaned it 3 times a day for 3 months and I had no problems or pain from the area when kids were small and climbing all over me.

AlannaOfTrebond · 23/08/2024 18:33

Worst piercing I ever had for healing, it was constantly rubbing on things and catching on clothes and belts.

It did eventually heal, but it took quite a while and a lot of care.

Maytag · 23/08/2024 21:34

I loved mine, it healed without issue. Sadly it does not look so attractive on the mum tum as I have a stretch mark straight through it and it can catch on my waistband when wearing high waisted trousers/jeans. I’m not slim though so that might be a factor. If I could wear it now, I would!

TheWomanWho · 24/08/2024 13:52

Thanks for all the replies - sounds as if people have really different experiences with this one. Maybe I'll just have to go for it and take it out if it's too annoying...

OP, MN is often a bit like watching the News. Lots of posters start things off, but few let us know the outcome. Please let us know how you get on.

Haha, I know what you mean. Not much to update unfortunately. I went to the piercer today but he didn't have the type of jewellery I wanted so I need to either find another piercer or go back when his next order comes in. Hopefully I won't have talked myself out of it by then!

Back for an update - got this done last week and no problems so far. Just as well because I love it and would be gutted if I had to take it out !

ShiteRider · 12/10/2024 17:47

I had mine for 25 years. I loved it, I only took it out because I had to have an MRI.

I might get it done again. I’m in my 50s

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 12/10/2024 17:57

I got mine done at 17 so maybe not quite what you're looking for.

It takes a while to heal as a tricky place but I love it and wouldn't be without it.

LostOnTheWayToManderley · 12/10/2024 18:01

I had to remove mine after an op in that area and it’s not now possible to get it re-done. I miss it so much! Had it for about 10 years with no issues at all. Very jealous of you.

Strawberrypicnic · 12/10/2024 18:05

Nooo don't do it! I had one as a student, it never healed properly, I'm in my 30s now and despite not having had it in for a decade I still have a scar and a weird crease in my stomach as a result

Edit sorry didn't see your update before writing this, fingers crossed yours heals smoothly 😅

bobisbored · 12/10/2024 21:08

I had mine done about 30 years ago! It hurt but healed fine. I took it out when I was pregnant and didn't put it back in again. There weren't the plastic flexible things then. My belly is grim now so I wouldn't get it done again.
