Removing a John Lewis security tag from a Hush garment

I bought a Hush jumper in John Lewis today, but the assistant forgot to remove the security tag. Its a bit of a trek to get to John Lewis - can Hush remove the tag if I go in with my receipt?

Any shop with a magnetic tag remover would probably do it for you if you have a receipt

I thought alarms went off in store if the tag hadn’t been removed?

DeliciousApples · 21/08/2024 19:13

I'd be frightened to take it back in case they thought I'd bought one and stolen a second one and that is it...

Me too, but as you can see....

This happened to me and other store would not touch it.

Ended up using a fork to remove. It was not an ink tag. Was fairly easy, there are YouTube and info online.

TimeToStopLurking · 21/08/2024 20:14

Argh! I hate it when this happens and when it doesn't set any alarms off! I double check everything now.

It will depend on who you get I think. Tesco took one off months after I had bought something well in advance for my LO from there (and didn't realise the tag was still on), without having to show a receipt.

One time I had the credit card receipt only as proof of purchase for a t-shirt from Zara as I hadn't kept my receipt. They refused to remove it and made out like I had stolen it. First and last time I will ever shop in Zara. They gave the top back to me and said they didn't believe it hadn't set off any alarms. About 5 of them then gave me dirty looks as I left without setting off any alarms again. Ridiculous.

Good luck!

Use a strong magnet.

spuddy4 · 21/08/2024 20:26

Or if you know anybody that works in retail ask them to take it to work and remove it. I've had to do it a few times and any tag remover will work.

Strictlyshortly · 23/08/2024 11:27

Do you have a Waitrose nearby? They are part of the same group and might help.

IncognitoForLife · 24/08/2024 16:26

I had the same thought @Strictlyshortly but they can't help.

John Lewis call centre said I need to post it back to them, but they didn't give me many details. The call centre is really hard work. ☹️

Look it up online. I got one off at home once but can't recall how it was done.

tedgran · 24/08/2024 16:38

I had this happen to me a few years ago. I only discovered that the tag was still on when I went to put the top on on Christmas morning! I was fuming, to it back when they reopened, got free drinks and cake as recompense!. DH had suggested that I try to take it off, but I said it would wreck the fabric. JLwere fine ,I did have the receipt.

Laiste · 24/08/2024 18:52

That happened to me ages ago with a ££ Ted Baker coat for DD.

I was so worried it would be an ink tag but it wasn't. DH got a little hand saw and with me carefully pulling the material away from the bar we slowly cut it off.

When it happened to me with a pair of tesco's sunglasses i just marched up to the store and stuck my head round the corner to the security guard and said i'm coming in with something with a tag on can you get it off, waved the receipt and he did it.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 24/08/2024 19:50

My local H&M has a self service machine with a tag remover. You could buy something from H&M and then quickly remove your JL tag too??

isthismylifenow · 25/08/2024 08:24

I had this problem recently. It's so annoying. I also wondered why the alarm didn't go off at the door, so now I'm wondering what the point is of these.

I also didn't want to travel all the way back to where I got it, so I took it to a local branch of the store. And their magnetised system was different so although they were willing to take it off, they couldn't.

They said I could leave it with them and they will send it back to that branch, but that will haven't taken days. So I said if I don't manage it will do that. I went into a couple of other stores, most wouldn't help me. But then a shoe store did.

None of the diy options worked for me. It was on really tight and was a lace fabric so it didn't want to take the risk of hooking it with a fork.

lovemetomybones · 25/08/2024 08:36

Do you have a Waitrose nearby? They are linked to JL and might be able to help.

Okayornot · 25/08/2024 08:42

Waitrose won't remove it. This has happened to me before with an item I bought online and I ended up taking it to JL a few weeks later when I had time to get the tag removed. Was annoyed and said so, and they gave me £10 off.

You'd have to buy a magnet strong enough to remove it without risk as normal home magnets won't work, even if you stack them (I did try). In the end I decided it wasn't worth the risk of fiddling around with it.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 25/08/2024 09:03

I've had a different shop remove a tag for me after I was setting alarms off left right and centre - I think it was a seasalt item, it didn't set alarms off when I left the original shop but did in lots of others! One of the shops removed it for me because I had the proof of of purchase on me so could show I'd bought it that day and not stolen it!

FinallyHere · 25/08/2024 09:48

It is possible but time consuming to remove it oneself.

I only know this because DF once spent the whole three days of Christmas celebrations at home completely tied up in wrestling the security tag off someone's present.

He usually gets a bit bored at Christmas, when he is supposed to 'have fun' rather than keep himself busy doing 'jobs' for which he is then lavishly praised, so it was a win:win that time

Any other circumstances, probably not so much.

mondaytosunday · 25/08/2024 10:29

Security tags are specific to each store. My DD wore a shirt from H&M about four times with the tag still on it and went in and out of several shops! I noticed it finally and had to take it back to H&M. I didn't have the receipt anymore but it was obviously work and it was removed without question.

HungryForSnacks · 25/08/2024 10:57

You could buy the same jumper online from JL, then send back the original jumper and get the refund so you're not out of pocket

faustina · 25/08/2024 12:55

I had an absolute nightmare with something JL left the tag on (I used the click and collect at Waitrose). Nobody had the same tag remover - I think I asked every single shop where I lived, and they had sold out of the item at JL so they couldn't just send me another. In the end I took it back to Waitrose and JL arranged for it to be sent back to a store which removed the tag and sent it back to me, but it took ages to arrange and hours on the phone to their customer services. Hope your problem is solved in less time than mine took!

Startingagainandagain · 25/08/2024 13:49

It happened to me with an M&S jacket...

I went back into the store with the receipt and they removed the tag for me.

That tag was under one of the arms, so I assume the sales assistant missed it.

Really annoying though.
