Looking after teen boy's long hair

DS15 likes to have his hair long but I'm just not sure how best to look after it. It's fairly thick but also has a bit of a wave/curl. He used to brush it every morning, and it would just go frizzy/fluffy. Then he read some different advice and has stopped brushing when dry, and started using curl cream each day. This has promoted some nice curls around his face, but the rest of his hair looks a bit lank and tangled.
Does anyone have a boy in the family with similarish sounding hair? How do you care for it so it looks healthy?

Start using cantu shampoo and conditioner. They are silicone and sulphate free so really help curly hair to not get clagged up with stuff whilst staying moisturised. Then each morning spritz with water to dampen down and add some leave in conditioner or even just a very small amount of normal conditioner. It's the same thing I do with my hair and works well.
Oh and try to only wash once or at most twice a week.
