Away for 10 days and don’t know if I should have my nails painted - will my nails need redoing in this time?

Are they gel or normal Polish?

I’ve not had them done yet!

I don’t want to find that this isn’t a good idea. Is there a longer lasting method?

I have get my nails painted with gel polish in a shop.

10 days on holiday, laying on a sun lounger they last all holiday.

10 days at work, they start to chip pretty quickly.

Depends what sort of holiday you're going on, but if it's a beach holiday they should last.

bryceQ · 13/08/2024 17:22

Gel never chip for me and I get them every 3 weeks.

Enjoy your holiday!

dontforgetme · 13/08/2024 17:38

I get my nails done every 3/4 weeks and they have always lasted our 2 week holiday. However my gels went to shit within 5 days on our recent holiday. They have never done this before, the only thing I can think is that I used Boots Soltan suncream for the first time this year and it made my gels peel.

AmiesLana · 13/08/2024 17:52

So gel on them it seems! Thank you.

Any ideas on a colour? Neutral to go with anything or bright and a clash?

Favourite colours anyone?

I spend a LOT of time in the water whilst abroad and gels or BIABs start to lift after the first week. Only on my fingernails- my toes are indestructible 😅

I’ve tried different salons so don’t think it’s the application- it’s always happened.

Going somewhere hot?
Have some mad holiday colours like orange or blue or different colours on each finger.
Definitely gel as it will last all holiday, take a nail file and if you accidentally chip one you can gently file from underneath.
On holiday I have a french style manicure but with sprinkles of glitter like an ombre, starts with small particles going bigger, it looks lovely when my hands are tanned.
Ask the nail technician for ideas or Google some before your appointment.
Enjoy your holiday!

@AmiesLana Usually around 2-3 weeks. You get growth which obviously is noticeable. I struggle with three weeks with a colour. Gels are harder wearing, and don’t chip. A 10 day holiday would be no issue at all.

rainbowbee · 13/08/2024 18:34

My fingernails grow too quickly to bother, however I would get them done for a week for a holiday. My toenails grow quite slowly and a Shellac would last 4 weeks, possibly more with a pale colour. It does vary!

StellaCruella · 13/08/2024 18:38

Gels easily last 2-3 weeks so get that, also get them trimmed quite short first as they will grow with the gels on and if they get too long they are more likely to chip.

StellaCruella · 13/08/2024 18:39

What colour is your skin?
I'm white and quite pale but tan a bit on holiday - I like coral in summer, or pastels. Darker skin can cope with brights better than I can.

mondaytosunday · 13/08/2024 21:26

Gel will last no problem. Regular polish, for me, about a day!

ItsAlrightDarling · 13/08/2024 21:29

My gel manicure is still going strong after 5 weeks, including a 3 week holiday in Spain apart from the fact that it’s grown out. I can’t get the fucker off, so if anyone has any suggestions that isn’t soaking them in acetone (tried multiple times and they’re not budging) then I’d love to hear them because they’re driving me insane.
It hasn’t chipped or peeled at all though 😏.

Iwant2beJessicaFletcher · 13/08/2024 21:39

@ItsAlrightDarling - you need to file off the top layer of gel as much as you can, then put cotton wool soaked in acetone on it & then wrap each nail in foil. Leave for 10 minutes or so & you should be able to scrape the gel off (use an orange stick if you don't have a proper scraper).

ItsAlrightDarling · 13/08/2024 21:43

I have done the cotton wool soaked in acetone and wrapped in foil for 10 mins, 3 times! It hasn't budged at all. I will do it again with filing first tomorrow. Thank you. Honestly I’ll never have gel again… unless you can have them redone every couple of weeks it’s more trouble that it’s worth, in my opinion. And I don’t have the free time to have it done regularly.

Polkadottydot · 13/08/2024 21:47

@ItsAlrightDarling was it the gel bottle by any chance ? I could NOT shift that stuff. Ended up painting over it and growing it out

I’m not sure, I had them done in Spain. My MIL took me as a treat and it’s turned out to be the bane of my life 😂. Whatever it is, it’s strong stuff!
