Who else paints their own nails?

I feel like I'm in a minority painting my own nails with a block colour.

Most of my friends pay £30+ every fortnight to get theirs done professionally.

I'm happy that it gives them a buzz, but I just don't understand the appeal myself.

Do you get your nails done regularly?

You’re not alone! I had mine painted once (just polish, before gels became a thing) and honestly I do a better job. I’ve got good at it and enjoy it when I have the time to allow good drying time between base / colour / top coat and therefore know they will go 10 days before chipping. If I don’t have a spare couple of hours, I use nail wraps (not the gel ones, normal ones that don’t need curing with a lamp). Done in 15 minutes and last at least two weeks, usually longer before I can’t resist peeling them off.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/08/2024 21:17

I do my hands twice a week, feet once a week. Currently have Essie Mint Candy Apple on my fingers and OPI Big Apple Red on my toes - feeling fruity, apparently!

xyz111 · 12/08/2024 21:22

I do. I have a gel kit at home. It's the only thing girly about me 😂. And saves me a fortune!!!

Growlybear83 · 12/08/2024 21:22

I paint my own toenails and always have. I have developed an allergy to nail varnish on my finger nails in recent years so can't wear it any more, but when I did, it would never have crossed my mind to have paid anyone to do it!

Cloverforever · 12/08/2024 21:24

I do mine, could never bring myself to spend that sort of money on something I can do just as well.

I like H&M or rimmel nail varnish which is cheap as chips. I used to use OPI but don't find it any better and 3 times the price.

Underlig · 12/08/2024 21:25

I don’t know anyone who has their nails done professionally. Most people I know don’t paint them either.

Frlrlrubert · 12/08/2024 21:26

I paint my own (when I can resist biting them or picking the skin long enough for them to be worth doing).

Weirdly I've just booked in tomorrow for the first time ever for a manicure and polish (just normal polish) before a holiday as I'd like a design this time. Here hoping they do a good job.

JoJothegerbil · 12/08/2024 21:26

I've had mine done in the past. Gel polish actually helped me kick,y lifelong nail biting habit. Now I mainly do them myself and only occasionally get them done professionally. I'm tempted to try one of those powder dip kits. Has anyone else used one?

StormingNorman · 12/08/2024 21:26

I like to get gels but can’t do it regularly as they weaken my already soft and thin nails. In between times, I tend to buff to a shine or use a nude treatment-polish combo at home, usually while watching TV. I don’t enjoy doing either but do like shiny nails.

LegoHouse274 · 12/08/2024 21:27

Me. Not religiously though. In the winter in particular I often go months never painting them. In the summer my toenails are always painted, my fingernails maybe half the time.

I couldn't afford to get them done professionally and I like the colour so I do them myself. Obviously they don't look professional! But I don't care, I like them.

Queenofheart · 12/08/2024 21:29

I normally paint my own but have them gel painted for a treat now and again and always when I go on holiday as they last longer, my SIL does them and only charges £15, I wouldn’t pay the higher costs though as I can do them ok, just gel lasts longer and they don’t chip

StrawberryFire · 12/08/2024 21:29

I got mine done for the first time, I had lovely long healthy nails, now they have a ridge in them and they break constantly, I Will never get them done again

Neveranynamesleft · 12/08/2024 21:30

I use poundshop nail varnish. 2 coats left to dry then a good coat of their clear stuff on the top to seal it. Lasts for ages.

mdinbc · 12/08/2024 21:31

Question for those who say they do gel on occasion. Do you go in to get the gel removed, or somehow remove it yourself? I tried to remove gel by myself once and it was impossible.

LutonBeds · 12/08/2024 21:33

Have acrylic every 2/3 weeks. Nothing else lasts on my nails and I’ve tried all the gel/BIAB/polish brands there is!

BlackSwan · 12/08/2024 21:33

I do my own every week. Apart from cost/time savings, I don’t like supporting nail bars.

yeesh · 12/08/2024 21:34

I do my own as I like to change the colour, I use the rimmel two step gel polish.

I Get it removed by SIL who does them as it’s too difficult to get off. If you get them done at a salon they usually charge about £5 to take it off or nothing if you’re getting them redone

misssunshine4040 · 12/08/2024 21:35

My polish never lasts and chips and I hate the faff of painting and drying. I always smudge them.

I get the done every month and they last and I can forget about them

paisley256 · 12/08/2024 21:35

I get gels done if I'm going on holiday but the rest of the time I don't bother because even if I do a base and top coat they chip the same or next day. Where might I be going wrong please all you DIY folk? Can someone link to DIY products or even home gel kits please? Thank you.

VaddaABeetch · 12/08/2024 21:38

I cut my nails & file so they’re neat. I’ve never had my nails ‘done’, when did it become a thing? Each other BTW but not for me

paisley256 · 12/08/2024 21:41

Is this what the DIY at home gel folk are using? There are cheaper ones but this had the most positive reviews. Thanks

I use Glamrdip. Love it. Takes a bit of practice but I can now apply it with the tips and get a super professional long lasting finish. Get loads of compliments. No lamp needed which is great. They last really well but are a bugger to remove!

We have matching toes! It’s a fabulous colour, forgot I had it in my stash then was having a sort through and thought AHA!

I'm 42 and I bite my nails. They are so tiny they're never painted. Not an attractive trait, I accept. I've tried everything including therapy to break the habit which I've had since the age of 11. I suspect I'll be biting on my deathbed

I’m 47 and bit my nails every day until 2 years ago. I got acrylics for a few months and it gave time for my natural nails to grow underneath. Haven’t bitten them since. (I have to keep them trimmed and polished though, or I’d start nibbling again 😆)
