How long did your birkenstocks last?

I have a pair of Arizonas. I bought them about a year ago in june. The heel of the left is very worn down and crumbling a little.

For context: i walk around 10 - 20 thousand steps a day in the summer months (dog walking mainly). So effectively have had them for two summers. I thought that they would last for years, but they will have to be replaced next year.

Is this maybe due to heavy use (and/or foot issues)? Or have you had a pair that have survived such use?

My most recent pair didn’t seem to last nearly as long as previous pairs

cannynotsay · 11/08/2024 08:19

I thought mine would last longer too!!! I don't think there meant for big days

2chocolateoranges · 11/08/2024 08:20

Ive had mine for 14 months, wear them continually over the spring/summer months and still look as good as new.

DaveWatts · 11/08/2024 08:20

That's quite a lot of use! They're not DM boots, they will wear out if you wear them all the time as the soles aren't that thick. I wear mine non-stop when it's warm enough and two years is about average I'd say.

Not being rude but are you overweight? My MIL and her sister have the same pair. MIL (very slim) has had hers three summers, wears them every day all day in the summer and as slippers at home. They look like new. Her sister (much heavier) has had hers a year and they are very worn on the bottom and starting to crumble at the heel.

howlsmovingbouncycastle · 11/08/2024 08:27

Do you drive in them? Mine crumble at the heel if I do.

But I would also say mine aren’t lasting as long as they used to - I had a pair of Gizahs that lasted me about 10 years, whereas my most recent Arizonas only lasted 2-3.

isthismylifenow · 11/08/2024 08:35

Did you get the cork wet?

They can degrade faster if so. They cork
needs to be resealed from time to time.

Doingmybest12 · 11/08/2024 08:38

Are they slightly small and you tread too far back on them? I think how they last depends on your walk, mine always crack across the middle ,across the ball of my foot within the first year.

My brother is a cobbler. He resoles and renovates Birkenstocks for £30. Take yours to a local cobbler - you’ll be amazed at the results!

willsandnoodle · 11/08/2024 08:44

I bought mine last year, and they're looking worn out now. I wear them all summer. Quite disappointing il only get one year out of them as they're expensive!

This. My Boston’s are 5 years old. No wear at all to the top or insole. Have been resolved once and re-heeled again this year. Worth doing as the price of new Birkis has shot up in the last 3 years.

ThePoshUns · 11/08/2024 08:47

Mine last about 3 summers

TimothyIsNotAnArmardillo · 11/08/2024 09:09

I've got a pair that I've been wearing since 2005 and they are still fine.

Have another pair that are about 2010 and the cork is starting to crumble.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/08/2024 09:29

I tend to buy a new pair of Madrids every two years or so. I absolutely hammer them over the summer as they are pretty much the only shoes I wear May through September and I walk miles and miles every day.

I also pronate out and with Birkenstocks that seems to wear the outside of the back sole down fairly quickly.

PoliteOtter · 11/08/2024 09:33

About 3/4 years before they start looking a bit tatty but I do not do any serious walking in mine, I have some Brooks trainers for that.

BIossomtoes · 11/08/2024 12:11

I bought a pair of Arizonas in 2021 and the bloody things refuse to wear out! They look really shabby now but there’s still masses of wear left in them.

Abstractthinking · 11/08/2024 13:22

Thanks for your answers! I will look into getting them resoled (if they aren't too far gone!).

I have Mayaris and have had them 5 yrs, but don't wear them that often outside the house.

They still look good/ have a lot of wear in them.
