Hair mask Aussie or Shea? Or other?

I have thick hair, coarse and dry. Getting drier with age (I'm mid 50s). I would like a once a week hair mask, can't afford more than about £10. I've wasted far too much money on expensive hair products that never do anything great! So I refuse to pay £££ now. Reading reviews Aussie deep moisture and Shea manuka honey seem to be highly regarded. Anyone tried them?

There was a thread recently asking what people waste money on - I put hair products!

Have you tried using a hair oil on wet hair?

I really like the bleach London reincarnation mask. My hair isn’t think but is dry.

I do a hair mask once a week when I go swimming and it has definitely improved the condition of my hair.

I've used both of the ones you mention and they are good. Nice scent, easy to apply etc.

Another customer in Boots recently recommended this one though and it is definitely a step up and half price at the moment!

L’Oréal Paris Elvive Glycolic Gloss 5 Minute Lamination Treatment for Dull Hair 200ml www.boots.com/loreal-paris-elvive-glycolic-gloss-5-minute-lamination-treatment-for-dull-hair-200ml-10338962

I would also recommend a wide tooth comb to apply it.

I use the Hask hair mask. Tesco £1 a sachet
Also use a Hask hairspray which is a leave in conditioner, I use that also. And don’t use the hairdryer!

I have coarse hair that is always dry, Aussi used to work circa 10 years ago but I don't know whether my hair has become too damaged for it to work anymore on me or if their formula has changed.

I now.like Palmers protein masks in the sachet, they're under £3. they used to be too heavy for my hair but not anymore... i guess it is my hair getting too dry for Aussie then! Anyway, after applying, i pile my hair on top of my head and wrap it with cling film or a plastic hat/bag then a warm towel fresh out of the tumble dryer and let it sit for half an hour to an hour before rinsing out. The heat helps it penetrate deeper. If you had those heat domes that you sit under it would be even better but obviously no cling or plastic on your head if you are using a heat source.

Yes but it left my hair sticky and weird.

Washing out hair oil first without any water add shampoo and start working it in yout hair full length for a couple of minutes, then add a bit of water to lather, rinse and shampoo again. If i start by wetting my hair even if I shampoo twice it stays oily. Shampoo on dry hair first is the trick with oiled hair.

I don't find Aussie does anything for my hair though I love the smell! I use the Davines one - called something like Renaissance circle? I really like it.

MissyB1 · 10/08/2024 08:33

OK sounds like Aussie might not be the best bet. Going to check out some of these recommendations.

I use this once on a while on my hair www.superdrug.com/hair/hair-treatments/hair-masks/garnier-ultimate-blends-hair-food-banana-hair-mask-390ml/p/775729

Osmo intensive deep moisture. 1.2 litres for £15 at Amazon.

One pot lasts for ages and it is effective.

I also tried the bleach London mask following recommendations here and found it no more effective than ordinary conditioner.

Sounds more like You need a good clarifying shampoo before any mask.

Allwelcone · 13/08/2024 20:53

I use coconut oil on my hair and leave it on all night

henlake7 · 14/08/2024 10:06

I dont think a once a week mask would do much for me, I prefer more of a little and often approach!
I use Aussie shampoo, then the Garnier hair food conditioner (I leave it in for about 10 mins before washing out) then a ton of leave in conditioning oil afterwards, oh and air dry as much as possible.
The amount I use it feels like my hair should look like an oil slick but it actually seems to work!
