What to wear for race day then concert

Has anyone been to one of these? I like the idea of getting dressed up for the racing but then I’ll feel a bit OTT for the concert afterwards plus there’s no way I can stand in heels all day. Dress code just says smart but that jeans and a sweatshirt are ok so no help at all! Has anyone else been to one of these and what did you wear? Thanks :)

I'm a regular race goer and I'd second what you said about silly shoes - don't do it! I see scores of women carrying their shoes and walking barefoot which must be horrible. People do seem to dress up on the whole but probably your main problem will be the change in temperature as it gets later so I'd definitely factor that in.

@SunshineonLeaves which course? There are very different "standards" between courses

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/08/2024 17:49

I've done it for Ladies Day at Chelmsford. We dressed up for the races and stayed like it for the concert. I just put a pair of flip flops in my bag for the evening. The concert part started quite early and I think we were all home by about 10.

I'm guessing you're going to the Dubai Shergar race day at Ascot with the Sugababes playing? I have nothing to add but when I saw the advertising sign for this as I was driving past I did think about the dress code. I think it says smart casual and absolutely no flip flops.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/08/2024 18:01

I took my flip flops with me to Ascot. We were in the Queen Anne enclosure for ladies day and by the end of the day most women were in flip flops and holding their heels.

I'm not sure they really care after the races are finished as that would be petty. What can they do?

I did just quote the dress code for that particular event.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 07/08/2024 18:27

@EraOfTheGrey yes I think once the posh bit of the day is over they aren't bothered about policing the dress code. Lots were barefoot on the way out - flip flops better than bare feet I think.

@SunshineonLeaves Ive been to quite a few of these. You don’t need heels all day! Wear flats or low heel. The enclosures I go into, I don’t see flip flops. Mostly people want to dance a bit too. So wear a dress, (fairly casual one like a shirt dress)!take something for if it gets chilly and flattish shoes, eg espadrilles. Or summer trousers and top. Aim to be comfortable. I can honestly say that unless you are totally overdressed and you think it’s Royal Ascot, no one will care or even look at you.

What did you think you might wear? Don’t wear shorts either by the way. Nor a hat.

Thanks all, it’s Newmarket - not sure if that helps?

I was thinking of a dress, originally quite a posh one (for me!) but now wondering if a more casual one will be better. I’ve got some flatform sandals that are pretty comfy, not sure about a jacket - I’d normally go denim but that doesn’t feel quite right.

@SunshineonLeaves Newmarket is not that posh. These concerts are usually quite fun and people get in the mood for music. As they are after racing, it can get a bit chilly. A wrap or even a smart cardi would work, Obviously if it’s baking hot you don’t need to worry.

I’ve heard Newmarket can get quite buzzy so it won’t matter too much what you wear. It’s on the July course which is attractive. It will be a fun day.
