Serum/oil for fine wavy/curly hair

My fine wavy/curly hair needs some styling help - it always goes so flyaway and frizzy and undefined specially at the back and sides.
I air dry my hair as I like the curls and diffusing makes it even frizzier, and blow drying with a brush makes it poofy and ends up looking terrible.
I have tried the only curls products, living proof, a aveda curly range, frizz ease curl stuff, as well as trying a trèseme oil.
What can I use to reduce this frizziness and make it look smoother and more defined, without weighing my hair down or making it greasy?

I think your hair looks lovely as it is.

Have you tried gel, letting it dry hard then scrunching out?

Puppylucky · 03/08/2024 17:36

I also think your hair looks lovely. A mousse and / or gel might work better than an oil which will just weigh your hair down I use Merwave products which are nice and light

GreenSmithing · 03/08/2024 18:25

What didn't you like about the products you've already tried? Too much build up, they made your hair go stringy or...?

Hi OP, my hair is a bit like yours and I'm on the search for good products too. I was thinking giving the Only Curls a try but read your post, what didn't you like about them?

I've tried all the stuff that you can buy at Boots and Superdrug like John Frieda, the pink curl jelly, etc, but I never found "the one" if you know what I mean

Stringy curls or super dry, mostly! I got good definition with some products but they made my hair dry, others were good and hydrating but made my hair stringy or really greasy.
I don’t think I’m after super definition but just reducing the frizz and poofiness at the sides particularly.

Their shampoo and conditioner made my hair really matted and hard to style. I felt like I needed loads of both styling products to see a difference and I ended up feeling that even though it gave me the curls i wanted my hair was so greasy and I’d be washing and styling it every day - am used to washing once every other day if not every third day at the moment

I've got fine hair and the ouai hair oil is great and non greasy. I love it

Popcorndoggy · 03/08/2024 20:08

It looks love.y but for more definition and hold try Bean and Bee curl custard. It’s fab .

Goldenphoenix · 03/08/2024 20:13

Cantu Curl Cream is lovely. It's great value and smells amazing.

MerylSqueak · 03/08/2024 22:20

I've got similar hair and I've found mousses after dying very gently with a diffuser better. I know you're supposed to put them on before but it's too heavy for my hair, as are all the oils and leave in conditoners that I've tried have been. I just use a puff of mousse in one palm and put small amounts of that in after it's dry with the other hand.

My hair is very similar in texture to yours and I swear by umberto giannini curl jelly when soaking wet, air dry then scrunch out the crunch. It's the only product that stops the frizz for me.

Xtraincome · 03/08/2024 22:59

So pleased I found this thread. Got some ideas for myself and DD6, just trying to find the right brush for her now.

Stumbled across a website with hair silks for kids in my Googling as well.

Theydontknowaboutus · 03/08/2024 23:20

My hair is similar and I use Merwave products - although just the mousse and the gel, and they are pretty good at keeping down the frizz.

quintessentially166 · 03/08/2024 23:41

My routine, nicked from Tik Tok...

Wash with shampoo twice
Apply conditioner and rinse
When hair is soaking wet apply curl cream
Brush in section from root to tip to clump curls
Scrunch in curly hair gel
Wrap hair in micro towel or old t shirt for about 10 to 15 mins,
Diffuse with hair dryer or air dry
Take some hair oil, I use Argan and rub through hair to remove gel casting (like clap hair at root and gently drag down)
Tip head upside down and put fingers at roots and shake hair to puff up curls

Do not wash hair everyday it dries out the curls. I do this routine twice a week.

Wear hair tied up on top of head to bed and then on non wash days just spray with fine mist of water next day...product in hair reactivates or Cantu Comeback Curl Next Day Reactivator also helps and smells lush.

quintessentially166 · 03/08/2024 23:58

This is a good brush, you brush from
Under hair from root to tip, bristles facing outward titling the brush so hair goes on groves clumping the curls

Thanks @peanutpuffs , my hair is oily/greasy and I've got to wash pretty much everyday so I think I'll give the shampoo and conditioner a miss but may try the styling products only

Someone suggested the Umberto Giannini curl jelly up thread but it leaves my curls "crunchy" if that makes sense. I then tried their oil and it didn't fare a lot better. It didn't do much for the frizz either. What I'm doing now for the frizz is to get a soft toothbrush, dab on a little serum, remove the excess with a tissue and brush the flyaways gently

WhereAreWeNow · 04/08/2024 13:10

My hair is similar. I think the key to getting definition and avoiding frizz is using a leave in conditioner or curl creme (I like the umberto Giannini curl control cream) AND then scrunching in gel. It's important hair is properly wet when you do this. Then leave it to dry until it's totally dry. Then you scrunch in oil (I like Nuxe oil) to break the 'cast' and get rid of the crunchiness you've experienced.

Geneticsbunny · 04/08/2024 13:10

I have very similar hair and I wash and shampoo with cantu shampoo and conditioner and then whilst hair is still wet, run a bit of conditioner through aand use as leave in conditioner. I then put mousse on whilst very wet and just let dry naturally
If the mousse has made the curls crunchy I scrunch them a bit to sort it out.

Yogachick · 27/08/2024 23:26

@quintessentially166 what curly hair gel do you use pls?

Sziasztok · 27/08/2024 23:30

Cantu curl cream
