Would you wear a denim jacket that doesn't 'meet in the middle'?

I've held on to a denim jacket for years after going up a dress size because it's such a beautiful shape, and I hoped that I'd eventually be able to wear it again.
I've lost some of that weight, and the jacket now fits ok across the shoulders and back.
Whilst I'd never fasten the buttons on a denim jacket (or any jacket really), I've always felt like size-wise it should look as if it could be done up or within an inch or two of that. The edges of this jacket now go just past the nipples, so about a 4-5 inch gap. I thinks it looks ok, just don't want it to look like I'm wearing a jacket that is too small. What do you think? Thank you

Hmm … @denimjacketquestion if the jacket covers so little of your front, I suspect it also looks too small all round when you’re moving about rather than standing before a mirror.

Has someone (who isn’t obliged to be nice to you) seen you wearing it over other clothes?

StarlightLady · 16/07/2024 08:44

I have an ancient denim jacket that does not have (or has never had) buttons. I think the look would be fairly similar.

denimjacketquestion · 16/07/2024 08:47

@BlanklyMyDear yes, DH and DDs have seen it and say the fit is ok across the back and shoulders. I just don't know if the gap is too much at the front.

@StarlightLady does your jacket meet in the middle though or do you have a gap too?

I wouldn't. I've started wearing the size that fits me rather than the size I'd like to be and it makes a huge difference in how clothes look and feel. I look slimmer in clothes two sizes larger, because they fit!

BleachedJumper · 16/07/2024 08:50

I quite like the look of a small denim jacket that sort of intentionally never does up.

I’m Also ultra petite and the oversized trend does nothing for me, just look like a sack of potatoes. I do still wear it sometimes because it’s comfortable and I don’t always feel the need to dress in a flattering/desirable way, but when I wear things that are petite/fitted, people will comment on how much weight I’ve lost, when it’s far from the truth!

Sarvanga24 · 16/07/2024 08:50

I would think it's fine - with jackets that you're never going to do up, it means there's a bit less fabric flapping about.

Why not post a photo for people to see what it actually looks like - it would only need chin down/waist up, so not identifiable.

It comes with a gap. I’m fairly sure it was made to be that way.

Divasaurus · 16/07/2024 09:39

I have a stretchy denim jacket that hangs open quite wide but does up without any problems (and is not visibly tight or ill fitting. I’ve never thought twice about it to be honest and I feel great in it! As long as something isn’t actually too small for you, it should look fine worn open.

cloudy477654 · 16/07/2024 09:40

I think it's fine, I have one that's a size too small and it does meet in the middle but wouldn't button up over the boobs! But I've never buttoned up a denim jacket anyway

Werweisswohin · 16/07/2024 09:41

I wouldn't.

Boogieondownn · 16/07/2024 09:43

Well I would keep it because I think it needs to fit across the shoulders and back. I think you can have too much material at the front, especially if you’re more likely to wear it open anyway. It looks neater.

BlanklyMyDear · 16/07/2024 10:20

Theres no problem with wearing a jacket open! The issue is that the OP cannot do it up, which raises a question about its overall fit.

If it looks ok to you, @denimjacketquestion … (I’m afraid a DH and DDs would be on my list of unreliable observers.)

denimjacketquestion · 16/07/2024 10:35

Thank you for the responses, quite mixed! I was going to take photos to post on here but I think I'll get equally mixed responses!! I'll get DH to video me walking in it front and back - crucially wearing what I was thinking of wearing it with, watch it back with a critical eye based on points you've all made and then decide. Thank you .

Yes. I have a cropped, distressed, very fitted one, and I wear it with longer floaty dresses. This helps to balance out the silhouette more and add a bit of edge. Hopefully it all looks intentional!

LoobyDoop2 · 16/07/2024 19:28

Mine doesn’t do up, and it looks as though it’s the right size. I’ve mostly worn a loose denim shirt as an outer layer recently, though- it feels a bit more up to date.

henlake7 · 16/07/2024 20:05

I wouldn't personally. But then I like to be able to do my jacket up if I get chilly.

If it doesn't bother you (and you have an honest second opinion that you don't look like you're squashed into it) then wear it happily!

I'm the same with my favourite leather jacket/biker style . Sometimes my weight changes that I can't zip it up and I won't wear it. It's not really logical, but it's an imaginary rule my brain seems to have invented.

OP the video sounds good. Also a good look at the back in a mirror can do wonders sometimes

Michaelaoakman · 23/10/2024 16:52

I've got a Windsmoor jacket that was never designed to button up but stays permanently open by about 3-4 inch if i'm lucky. What,'s the fuss, wear a sleeveless top to allow a better fit, go for it !!

I held onto one that I couldn't do up for years but just chucked it out recently. I'd rather have one I can do up.

BeretRaspberry · 20/02/2025 08:52

I would and have. I always find denim jackets really wide on the shoulders so I usually size down. They fit everywhere else and because of my large mid section, they don’t always close but I prefer them that way.

Even when I was a lot smaller I preferred them like this too.

As others say, as long as it fits elsewhere, it will be fine.

Just realised it’s an old thread! Oh well! 😁
