I have cut my fringe a bit too short

I usually cut my own hair (because hairdressers refuse to believe that I want layers and want my hair dried curly). It is roughly shoulder length and naturally wavy/slightly curly, with layers achieved by the time-honoured "cut the end off the pony tail" method and I almost always have a longish fringe. This time I have cut my fringe shorter than I intended (if I had straight hair it would be a bit Bettie Page) and I don't love it, although I'm absolutely not the sort of person who cannot go out in public if they don't like the way their hair looks. I'm quite happy to brazen it out for a few weeks. However I am quite interested in updo ideas for medium-length hair with layers, as putting some or all of my hair up seems to balance the shorter fringe better, but I only really know how to do a pony tail or the kind of bun that's just a pony tail curled up. I see lots of great updo ideas online but they all seem to require really long poker-straight hair with no layers at all.

Any thoughts/suggestions, other than getting a professional cut which would probably need to be quite short to make sense of the fringe?

I'm the same as you op, hairdressers don't work for me for the same reasons, so I've also been don't the ponytail method for over a decade. I think only once did I end up with a too short fringe and I just tucked it in as if there wasn't a fringe. I think wavy hair does make that easier to do.

I have a deliberate mini fringe (and I love it!), it’s usually about an inch above my eyebrows.

I tend to do a little tuck under with the straighteners so the bottom edge looks neat. I also think it looks better with my hair up, so I normally wear a crown-height ponytail, and either a single bun or space buns.

I have wavy hair, have cut it myself for at least six years for the same reasons as you and also have a long fringe that I sometimes cut too short ... Am I talking to myself? 😅

I do this quite often, which works very well, as the shorter layers just tuck into the braid and it's very quick and easy. I usually just tie in one ponytail or doubled-up ponytail at the back:

And the Greek tuck with a headband works better on shoulder-length hair (as in, it's easier to tuck in) and again takes about 30 seconds to do in the morning:
