What do you think to this dress

For a graduation ceremony. Size 18, perimenopausal 5’8”. Very pale with very dark hair, pear shaped.

I’ve left it late to find something as I hate clothes shopping, but I will have to look back at the photos so feel like I need to try.

Or any other suggestions very welcome 🙏.

Dress

Must be modest and midi, no norks or knees. A line or fit and flare suits me best.

I’m not trying to match with the ugly colour of my gown so not bothered about that.

I usually wear a lot of navy or plum, plus things like cream in the summer.

Thanks @HolyPeaches, I bet that was gutting.

I haven’t booked photos, I’m a reluctant participant (didn’t go to my master’s graduation as life was hectic at the time). I am literally going because DC were mortified that I wasn’t going to bother.

A PhD! That's amazing. Congratulations!

FatatFifty · 01/07/2024 14:11

Thank you @MounjaroUser . After the initial relief of finishing it last year I am actually now missing the constant pressure of it/ft job/single parenting. I should* *go to the gym or something and try to lose the two dress sizes I gained during it/covid/menopause 😂.

PhD! Wow. Well done OP.

I love the shape and colours of the dress but I dislike polyester. I find it a bit sweaty.

FatatFifty · 01/07/2024 19:38

Thank you 🙏. So do I @BESTAUNTB re polyester. That aside the dress I linked to is completely outside my comfort zone pattern wise, but I’ll try it on and see what I think.

I’ve got two other options in my wardrobe. I like Brora (in the sale!) and have got two really nice dresses that could do, one is an embroidered cotton dress, lined in cotton and the other a silk tea dress with a silk slip. I love them both so those are options. Both very dark though.

One of those was my go to choice until DC couldn’t believe I was going to wear a ‘boring work dress’.

its gorgeous, a great find! wear it and have a great time celebrating with your family looking amazing in your new dress :)

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 01/07/2024 21:16

It's gorgeous- wear it!

FatatFifty · 04/07/2024 15:08

Just coming back to say the dress is really beautiful in the flesh, it fits beautifully and has a really nice weight/drape. I’m over it being made from polyester. It is completely lined with viscose and the hems are all probably 1 ½ inches. Feels like a very well made dress.

It is lovely, definitely a keeper. I have got two pairs of really comfy heels that I can choose from that go really well with it.

Thanks for all the encouragement, it really did help. 🌻

Thank you @SaltyGod .

Do you think it’s appropriate? I don’t want to feel overdressed, I’d imagined I’d just wear one of my tailored work dresses, but now I’m panicking and feel like that might be not enough effort.

Do not worry about whether "it's appropriate"! You are fifty and can wear anything you like with confidence. Wear it, it's beautiful!
