How not to look half asleep/ill without eyeliner on lower lashes

I've always worn smudgy dark eyeliner around my lower lashes as they are fine and fair even though I'm dark but I gather this is a bit of a dated look. Trouble is without it I dont look my best - my eyes need some definition and mascara just smudges. Help!

I use eyeshadow on a small brush, adds definition without being harsh. I usually use a medium warm brown colour same as my eyeshadow.
