Is this too casual for a wedding reception guest?

Hello I am an evening guest at a wedding and I am not a very fancy person at all so wearing a dress feels like a fancy step already… I have this dress. I am a curvy mid-40s mum… I have this in a 14 and it looks nice. But is it too casual? I think I’m worried as a colleague just posted a FB photo of her on holiday and is wearing the same dress just as a day dress…

if anyone has suggestions of shoes to wear or whether an accessory would be nice- these would be very much appreciated. I am guessing TOMs are a no-no 😆

I think it’s fine for an evening do.

JawJaw · 13/06/2024 23:25

I think it’s fine.

What are TOMS?

CJ0374 · 13/06/2024 23:26

Its fine for as an evening dress. I'd just be worried it looks very see-through in the 1st pic with the legs apart, so maybe wear a slip underneath. I have no idea what TOMS are, but you could wear skin toned heels or pick a colour from the flowers in the dress to accessorise with.

Dress fine, toms no 😅

Boxina · 13/06/2024 23:34

It's fine. Not very exciting but fine.

If your colleague is attending the wedding best to check she won't be wearing the dress!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/06/2024 06:06

I'm guessing Tom is her DP and she was wondering about whether to wear a pair of his brown brogues.

longdistanceclaraclara · 14/06/2024 06:11

It's fine. Toms are canvas very flat shoes.

YorkNew · 14/06/2024 06:18

I think it’s perfect for a wedding reception.

pattyparsnip · 14/06/2024 06:34

Its fine . These days I'm all for dresses you can dress up or down . Such a waste buying dresses that will be only worn a couple of times to special occasions. .

The dress is fine for a wedding. Pop a bit of makeup on and style you hair more than you usually would and that will make it look fancier.
For shoes I’d do a pair of low block heeled sandals / court shoes.

It3s a great so-called-summer wedding evening do dress! And I agree with the pp commenting on the practicality of buying dresses that can be worn on multiple occasions, so that two thumbs up from me.

What colour please?

Probably a nude shade or you could pull the green from the dress and do a nice emerald green. Or if you wanted to be a bit fancy go for sparkles. Or you can take the pink from the dress and go for a nice deep pink colour. There’s lots of choices that will look fab depending on how bold you want to be!

sunshinesky · 23/05/2025 23:00

It’s a lovely dress and perfect for an evening do, but you could wear it again lots of places too. Have a great time!

Badgerstmary · 23/05/2025 23:31

Op I have this dress & have worn it to a 50th & a wedding. I wasn’t sure if it was dressy enough to wear to a DofE presentation at Buckingham Palace so didn’t, but several other women did wear it & they didn’t look out of place. So as long as you’re not going anywhere posher than the palace it’ll be perfect!
