evening wedding reception - married abroad - what to wear

They were married in the carribean, and came back last week. The evening 'do' is this week, at a hotel. What do I wear? Trndy, caual or smart?
We went to an evening 'do' last year, and felt uncomfortable as I was too casual - everyone wore floaty dresses, or black trousers and a top. So i got that wrong.
Anyway - obviously there will be no extremelly smart outfits, as thjere will not be a day reception, so what to wear?
Black trousers and a treny top? heels? flats? I have a really nice white blouse (next) and a little black waistcoat - but is that too office-y?
thanks

I would say white blouse and black waistcoat is a bit office realy. How about an little black dress dressed up with fantastic coloured shoes and scarf/necklace?

I'd wear heels if you wear trousers and trendy top.

I have this problem too. Not sure how to dress for the evening thing when not going to the day. I might just opt for a dress and heels.

I agree with slur too.

I was thinking of wearing this (but it is in June) www.joulesclothing.com/product/Womens%5FDresses/E_MAYPOLE.htm

With a pair of red heels perhaps. Possibly a cardigan/jkt type thing.

I'm not a fan of black trousers and blouses at weddings. sorry.

Did just the 2 of them go abroad or were there family and friends there ? If the latter, you might find they will wear their "wedding clothes" to this 'do' as well so I'd be inclined to go with what you would wear to any usual evening reception.

Black trousers and "dressy" top with heels maybe ?

TillyScoutsmum · 08/04/2008 12:12

their family and friends - sorry

3 cats dress Nice dress, yes red heels could be good with little shrug or cover up

TillyScoutsmum · 08/04/2008 12:20

Lovely dress 3 cats... Is it navy ? or black ?

They took close family and friends with them. I'm just worried as haven't been to a wedding for ages, so don't want to get it wrong! Everyone looked so smart at the last evening do we went to! (There is no day do). I think black trousers boring really but just wanted make sure 'fitted in'. The waistcoat is a low cut one, black satin, short at sides, so it is very dressy - would not wear it to work ! But I take your point ,- it's what I wondered anyway.Have a nice red jersey wrap dress that looks REALLY nice, but not sure if they are still in - shame as not worn that much.

Red jersey wrap dress sounds good to me...but I'm a big fan of wearing something you feel good in as opposed to following the latest fashion trends...

Red wrap dress sounds good. If you are comfortable in it and it is fairly dressy. Fashion doesn't matter. Wrap dresses are fairly classic.
I wish I could wear one but I have no cleavage!

The other dress is navy and cream.

To a winter wedding I once wore a long chinese style dress in pale pink. It looked good, was a bit different and everybody wanted to know where it was from.

You could easily wear something like that at anytime of year.

It doesn't fit me anymore so can't wear it. Will try to find a link to a similar one.

If I were just going to an evening do I think I would be more inclined to be more dressed up as you havent had to be daytimey before hand. there are some lovely dresses on the shops at the mo.

p.s that black and white dress is lovely!!
