When the oversize look just doesn’t work, what do you wear?

Just that really. I have a 32f top half, waist 28, hips 28, although I think I appear bigger on top with slim ish hips. I do have a waist but I can appear as though I don’t. I look frumpy, hunched and pregnant in the oversized look.
Which style influencers would be helpful to follow and what clothing shapes work best?
Are there any shops that are good for this sort of shape?

Assuming that’s hips 38, I have a similar figure and appreciate that dresses have regained waists and v necks this year, rather than being oversized all over with crew necks and making me look like a (fashionable but not flattering) version of Nursie from Blackadder. My faves for day to day are from Nobody’s Child but I also wear vintage stuff. Im
still wearing ones that are oversized all over but only if slinky or very short.

I'm a 34 g with slim hips, and I think the trick is to find clothes that balance out your top half. So the straight wide cotton trousers that are in at the moment would work. I also think long dresses work well too, especially ones that skim the body, but which are a bit fitted.. There's lots of those around at the moment. I don't think there's any particular stores that caters to this body shape, unfortunately!

Something like this?

@WashableVelvet Sorry, yes, hips 38, and yes, that is a look that I have to try to avoid! I’ll have a look at Nobody’s Child, thanks.

@Appalonia I think the shape and colour of that dress could work for me. Thanks, I’ll have a look at it.

Big boobs are very very difficult to dress well. Especially as you age. It’s really obvious I can’t do it. Every summer I move into T-shirts or swimming stuff and people say “wow you’ve lost a lot of weight”….nope, same old body.

Similar proportions although bigger all over. I feel your pain! I wish I liked wrap dresses and bodycon more because they undoubtedly suit me. I'm always drawn to big masculine suit jackets and deep v neck shirts and jumpsuits but they make me look huge / indecent.

If I want the feel of oversized, I go for loose, wide leg cotton dungarees which you can wear a fitted or cropped t-shirt under. Then it's baggy but still shows I have a waist.

Wrap dresses are best.

I think the only over sized thing that really works on very curvy figures is wide legged trousers. If you dont define your waist then you will just look much bigger.
Vintage seems to work well for hourglasses (you can do it casual as well as dressy).

The oversized thing has def gotten out of hand though....I actually have a cord bomber jacket in a size 6 that is huge on me! (I only bought it coz it was £4 in sale and even though Im a 10 I thought Id chance it!!LOL).

Boogieondownn · 13/06/2024 11:08

Thanks for your replies. I can relate to your experiences.
I think my body shape totally disappears in wide leg trousers. I look a bit swamped. I think they work better on people with wider hips to hang them off.
Bomber jackets look wrong on me, all puffed out from and back like a bubble. I do love the M&S bomber jackets though, just not on me.

Nobody’s Child looks like the shape for me. It’s a little bit pricier than I’d like but better to have fewer things that are versatile and actually fit.

I'm petite 34DD 30 waist 37 hips i can never make the oversize work on me, without looking wide in the shoulders, I am a inverted triangle, I have at 63 just brought my first pair of wide leg jeans after watching a blogger try them, from mango they are called the culotte jean on me they are full length , I do like a wide leg trouser with fitted tops.
