Help me find a replacement for Gucci Pour Homme

Sadly Gucci pour homme, my favourite smell on DH ever, has been discontinued and any bottles cropping up on eBay etc are out of my price range. Similarly Dermot O'Leary Vetiver & Cedarwood -another fanny gallop inducing favourite of mine- is now no longer available. Angry

I'm going shopping soon to try to find an aftershave for DH. He is very easy going and although Gucci was his favourite he likes almost everything (even Joop ) so all that really matters is that I like it and find it as 'sexy smelling' as the aforementioned. So I'm trying to work out what other fragrances I might like. Gucci is a 'woody chypre' apparently, I don't know what the Dermot one is classed as, but another smell I really like is Bayliss & Harding Oud, Cedar and Amber, oddly, so maybe that helps?

I find a lot of fragrances really unpleasant and get headaches from them. Ones we've tried before and rejected: Gucci Guilty (sort of ok, tolerable); Eau Sauvage (sickly, headache); Bentley Absolute (read that it smells like Gucci but DOES NOT, vom vom vom, think it might smell of an earlier similar named Gucci that was discontinued in 2003). My DSs wear Joop and Versace Blue Jeans and I cannot bear the smell. I've never smelled a Tom Ford I like and I've sniffed a lot of them. We tried a Gucci dupe from somewhere and that was useless too.

I don't want to blindly go sniffing a load of aftershaves because i know i will end up feeling nauseous, so any pointers to likely aftershaves I can try out on our shopping trip would be very welcome please 🙏

Givenchy Gentleman?

Thisoldheartofmine · 11/06/2024 09:34

Although I see it's a "reinterpretation" of the original..

@Thisoldheartofmine I haven't tried Givenchy Gentleman but reading descriptions (there seem to be a few variations?) I like the sound of woody, amber and cedar notes, so I will give this a sniff thank you!

Terre d'Hermes Eau Intense Vetiver Eau de parfum

THE CREATION
Men are beckoned to another Terre. In 2018, Christine Nagel explored her vision of Terre d'Hermès and created Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vetiver. A new luminous vibration, an unprecedented expression of the power of Terre.

OLFACTORY NOTES
An intense, woody fragrance, Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vetiver expresses the depth of vetiver combined with the liveliness of green bergamot and Sichuan pepper.

The web site Fragentica lets you enter a fragrance you like and it suggests others on the same basis.
I used to love Nantucket Briar (discontinued) and it suggested V&R spicebomb . As another poster suggested.
I'm also fond of vetviver as another poster suggested .
And I like the same smells as those you've posted.
So ... Reckon you're on the right track.

SoManyBadgers · 11/06/2024 21:46

These are great suggestions! Thank you everyone, I'm going to find and sniff all the ones mentioned!

Update: I managed to sniff Hermes, Spicebomb, Givenchy Gentleman (two varieties) and a Valentino that the assistant suggested. Of these Hermes is definitely my favourite and might be the one! However I really wanted to try Hermes Vetiver which they didn't have so I'm going to try to find a tester of this before making a decision.

Thanks for all your help!

My husband wears V&R Spice Bomb which I love.

Showing how individual this is, ds has that and I don't love it.

you might like to read this, does sound very citrusy.

SoManyBadgers · 16/06/2024 18:59

@Thisoldheartofmine it was Terre D'hermes that I tried and really liked, but I was reluctant to buy it without testing the Vetiver version in case I like that even more!

I'm going to a different shop this week so hopefully they will have more choice. I will look for John Varvatos (never heard of him!) too thank you @Crikeyalmighty

@SoManyBadgers my husband got given a bottle of it and loved it- I would say it's more of a winter after shave -as smoky and woody-he likes kenzo or Issy miyakke in the summer

Seconding Spicebomb, it's gorgeous. Paul Smith Extreme was also super sexy but don't know if that's still available, I'm thinking of 20 years ago!

Edited as I saw you weren't fussed on Spice Bomb! Paul Smith is still available.

SoManyBadgers · 24/06/2024 12:24

Further update! We went back and bought the Terre d'Hermes and it's gorgeous, it doesn't disappoint on wearing.

We also bought a cheaper fragrance for everyday wear - Karl Lagerfeld Bois de Vetiver which I really like too.
