Have you ever had anything custom made?

I have call with a jeweller tomorrow and going to ask for a few tweaks to standard design earrings, white gold and pearl, will ask if I can have a bigger pearl and upgrade to Akoya. My wedding gift to self.

I have also shortened belts at the local cobbler. When I lived back in USSR, it was common to use atelier for bespoke clothes, I have a few wool coats.

Curious to hear of other made to order, special items.

I had 2 leather jackets (different styles) made in Paris. I wouldn't do it again.

Engagement ring.
I was not fond of generic rings so I drew one and had it done. It is silver and it was paid just as raw weight of metal as person making it was super excited to do something like that. He said he did not have custom made rings for over 25 years.
We bought wedding rings from the same place obviously :D

My wedding dress.
My friend made it for me, combining elements from different patterns.

scrapsontheside · 30/05/2024 23:38

Several pieces of jewelry from an independent working jeweler.
Love each one ❤️

Only my wedding dress and a dress for my husband’s 60th birthday dinner. They were both really nice .

I have a Harris tweed coat that I had custom made here in the UK. It's my favourite coat made by my very talented friend.

A number of dresses in childhood.

In recent times, I've had a few things made to measure online where you give measurements, and also things bought and altered to fit (one item falling into both categories...)

I bought some fabric not long ago, but the seamstress alterations advertising locally that they did not only alterations but also new clothes said they weren't doing that currently. There's another local place I mean to try, but I don't think I'll have the time before I go away for a couple of months.

If I found someone reliable and accessible to me, there's various things I'd get done that way.

Boots. I have stupid feet. So it’s helpful to be able to have boots made to fit.

A handbag.

My wedding ring was made to my own design. I make a lot of my own clothes so I guess they are custom made.

I get all my T-shirts made by Citizen Wolf - they’re in Australia, but they ship here and I love their ethos (and now they have a template for my dream tshirt shape and size, complete with my own custom tweaks like rolled sleeves, it’s so easy to get more made when I need them). I’m pretty sure I read about them on here originally.

I am long of torso and previously found buying T-shirts to be a nightmare!

Dresses made by my mum when I was little.

Woollen items knitted by my lovely granny super itchy sadly

Various costumes for school plays and ballet shows.

Does my making of made-to-measure clothing for my daughter count? I wonder if part of your interest is in why not just buy off the peg rather than going to the extra time and expense of making bespoke. If so, my reasons are

  1. clothes fit perfectly
  2. they are properly made in terms of cutting of the fabric, pattern matching, finishing of seams, knitted items have the correct length sleeves and bodies. 3)it feels more ethical - I know there is no sweatshop element in the manufacturing, and I can choose better fabric. (I do realise that no new fabric is properly environmentally sound sadly).
  3. the clothes are also unique, although that’s less of a motivation.

In terms of getting something custom made by a professional, she’s about to have a tutu made for her - proper fit, can be made exactly to her design requirements, the options for off-the-peg tutus are not sufficiently good and preloved is too much of a risk at the price point.

The only thing I have commissioned for myself is art.

When I was a student in Liverpool 25 years ago, there was a lady that had a shop where if you gave her your measurements and the style you wanted she would make jeans. I bought 3 pairs and they were great. She was cheap too.

TheOnlyAletheia · 31/05/2024 07:15

Wedding dress
Clothes made by mum
Clothes made by myself

last year I visited Hoi An and had lot of things made that had been in my head for ages - two pairs of silk cargos and a deep red silk kimono amongst others. It really was the best experience- I loved every moment 🙂

Cyclingmummy1 · 31/05/2024 08:09

Great question!

Clothes as a child - knitted and sewn. My grandma could smock so we had smocked summer dresses.

Our wedding rings.

A pair of amethyst earrings and an amethyst pendant. Presents from DH.

Not quite the same but my eternity ring has worn quite thin so I'm using my great aunt's wedding ring to build it back up.

PashaMinaMio · 31/05/2024 08:16

Shoes!
Lovely silk dresses in Singapore!
A velvet trouser suit (from my husbands tailor) when they were all the rage.
Dresses made to measure locally.

Currently a bespoke gold item and another item (to be decided) with some diamonds from another piece of jewellery.

Happyinarcon · 31/05/2024 08:34

I got a bunch of stuff made in shenzhen one time. It didn’t turn out great. I didn’t realize that types of clothing needed different types of fabrics and I couldn’t just pick my favourite fabric and have it made into a coat. I also didn’t realize that some tailors can make a fabulous coat, others can make fabulous trousers, but you need recommendations on which tailors to work with.
There’s a lot to be said for subtleties of cut and design that only a skilled tailor can capture. It’s easier for me to buy clothes and get them altered than start from scratch
