Found in Primark of all places, as I'm not normally a shopper there.
There's also a matching crochet shell top.
It's a really good quality heavy crochet in almost 100% cotton, with an elasticated waist.
Not on the Primark website yet but available in my local store.

I seriously hope its not crochet. If it is there is no way it is ethical.

Lol, no clothing in primark is ethical.

ScamanthaBrick · 25/05/2024 09:14

Yeah, no high street “crochet” is ethical if it’s actually crochet. A crocheted garment would cost hundreds. So not specific to Primark. Hopefully it’s just crochet-esque. Sounds nice if so!

True.

Interesting discussion.
I didn't realise there was such an argument over the under-valuing of crochet.

The skirt itself is made in China & I believe it's probably machine knitted, not handmade. A picture is attached.

Does anyone remember a similar response on here to somebody buying a helium balloon?

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 25/05/2024 11:04

I might be missing something here but why would anyone expect a Primark garment to be handmade?

TheDandyLion · 25/05/2024 11:06

Crochet isn't possible to do by machine so it's either knitted by a person (who probably didn't get paid well for it) or its a fake crochet knit by machine.

suburburban · 25/05/2024 11:22

Unfortunately so.

friskybivalves · 25/05/2024 11:26

Looks great OP, whether it's fake crochet or not. Does it run true to size?

Cantonet · 25/05/2024 11:30

Yes, it does @friskybivalves.

I am beating a path to Primark.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/05/2024 11:49

After getting a really nice dress over lockdown in Primark which a cashier there said they’d seen in M&S more expensive (and it was sold out too) I’d say buy what you want there and if you feel guilt about things being ethical or not just do a donation to charity to assuage your guilt.

It’s a nice skirt not my colour but pretty.

Cantonet · 25/05/2024 12:21

I know labour costs are pretty high now in China, so I'm assuming this is probably made via totally automated crochet production. Having said that I would never buy Shein or Temu & have only just started buying a couple of pieces of Primark, as it's one of only a few stores left in our market town.

Crochet won't have been knitted by anyone 😂 It's crocheted.

It won't be crocheted at all.

I have a "crochet" cardigan from Primark and whilst it's a crochet style, it is knitted.

Cantonet · 25/05/2024 12:31

Yes, it's fake crochet. But it's still called "A Crochet Skirt" in the shop so I'm sticking with my original title.
As far as I'm aware Crochet is not trademarked.

I wish they could trademark crochet! Then perhaps when people ask me to recreate a non crochet item they wouldn't get offended when I price it realistically!

By a non crochet item I mean things like the skirt, shops label it crochet and people don't know the difference.

Yes agree

Sillystrumpet · 25/05/2024 13:24

No such thing as automated crochet, there is automated knitting, but not crochet. I’d assume for that skirt they create rhe material via machine, sell it like any other material then make the skirts from it.
