Making your own creams and perfumes?

I have always been interested in making my own creams or perfumes, especially as I, frustratingly, always find that the ones I like always seem to end being produced or can only be got in a certain country (eg. USA), from where they stop shipping.

I wonder if there have ever been cases of anyone starting out on their own, without an enormous chemistry lab, mixing and experimenting? I find the subject so interesting and would love to try dabbling myself, but I imagine it would cost an absolute fortune in terms of the equipment. But you have to start somewhere, right? Any advice, suggestions, recommendations?

Maybe start with experimenting with kitchen cupboard ingredients eg olive oil, sugar, coconut oil etc to make Lush style products. i used to make a version of the Lush Angels On Bare Faces. i found the recipe on line and bought the ingredients.

You could also look into doing an aromatherapy course as that involves mixing potions etc.
