Sun hats for the slightly large of head

I'm off to the Olympics this summer, and in anticipation of sitting in baking hot sunshine for hours in the cheap seats, I thought it might be a good idea to get a sun hat.
I normally avoid hats. My ears stick out a little bit and my hair is so ridiculously soft that when I take a hat off, the line will stay in my hair until I wash it.
My head isn't gargantuan, just slightly larger than average. I can wear a standard shop bought hat, they just feel tight.
With all of this going on I usually avoid a hat and opt for a parasol instead, but I figure these won't be allowed at a sporting event. Do you have any recommendations so that I don't frazzle this year?

The men's hats in M&S are good for big heads (dom't bother with women's)

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 16/05/2024 22:02

My head is massive. Last year I bought a Panama from the men's section of H&M.

Terramom · 16/05/2024 22:03

Tilley !

RobinBobbin · 16/05/2024 22:05

M&S do a packable straw hat different sizes.

Meant to add, mine is well travelled and still looks pristine.

My head measures 60cm! I've ordered a sun hat from Cos - I'll report back.

Chewbecca · 16/05/2024 22:08

I've got the m&S one, it isn't v big.

WorriedRelative · 16/05/2024 22:10

I have a massive head, almost like the U2 ones on TFI Friday.

There is a big head hat store in amazon.

FemaleRageTheMusical · 16/05/2024 22:14

What about a visor? You can get some really cute ones now.

I third Tilley hats and they're washable and guaranteed for life

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 16/05/2024 22:30

I have a hemp Tilley hat. It's lovely and cool. I've had it over 20 years and it still looks good. Washes a treat too and stays put in strong wind. I have a large head and as long as you get your hat size right, you'll find them really comfy to wear.

Watching with interest as I have a massive Trinitron head and thick hair that I like to put up in summer, so it all needs to be crammed up there... hats are never big enough... I second trying men's hats in M&S, and I love the look of those Solbari (but fear buying online because you really need to try them on with hats)...

I'm contemplating getting a Tilley this year (but my husband wears one so it'll need to be different to his so we don't look like a pair of Scout leaders)...

I wish we could still wear those massive Edwardian hats, they seemed to manage with piles of hair put up... preferably with yards of white gauze holding them on... sigh...

PS have a great time at the Olympics, @LimeandCourgette !

DahliaSmith · 17/05/2024 09:37

Huge head here, bypass womens hats, go straight to the mens.

LimeandCourgette · 17/05/2024 17:39

Lots of suggestions here, thanks. I was convinced I would check back and find an empty thread, so thank you.
I will have a look through the links and hopefully buy something soon.

Solbari are great. The larger size is, if anything, slightly too big for my giant head. This has never happened before.

FemaleRageTheMusical · 17/05/2024 21:49

@LimeandCourgette are you worried about the style of hat because almost all the ones posted might be large but they are fairly ugly. What's your style?

Goldenmario · 18/05/2024 06:47

Agree about Cos. I’ve spent years buying men’s hats but now I can buy women’s hats that fit comfortably.

StasisMom · 29/05/2024 21:32

Forgot to update - the Cos one did fit but was oddly floppy around my face. I've ordered one from Tilley....
