Clothes to cheer me up after a hellish year

I’ve had the year from hell - my husband died very unexpectedly six months ago, the admin is never ending and draining and to top it all I had a freak accident last week at the end of what was supposed to be a ‘cheering myself up’ riding holiday and am now recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Due to the stress of everything I’ve lost shedloads of weight and I wasn’t overweight to start with. I’m 5’7”, not sure exactly what I weigh but it can’t be more than about 55/6 kg. I used to be a ‘small’ 12 ie if there was a 10-12 option I’d take that but today I got a pair of jeans out of my wardrobe (12) and they were so ridiculously big that even with a belt cinched in as far as it would go they were unwearable.

So I’ve decided that when I’m well enough to go shopping I need to get a new wardrobe that fits and will cheer me up. I mostly wfh and live in the countryside but go into the office once a month or so. I’m 60, normally very active, don’t like restrictive clothes, mostly wear trousers as they’re more practical with dogs etc. I’m fair-skinned, grey eyes, have greying fair hair and my favourite colours are blues and greens - teal and duck egg blue.

If you’ve made it this far I’d love some style tips/ recommendations of brands to look at. Budget is more than primark and less than designer - thank you ☺️

I'm so sorry that you've had such an awful time. I hope you recover well.

I immediately thought of Fat Face. They have some lovely clothes at the moment. Very cheerful and bright colours and designs for summer. They also have a lot of blues, greens etc. Their clothes are good quality and practical for outdoorsy people.

I don’t have any tips for brands but recently I have been buying white T-shirts/tops that seem to be more readily available in nice styles and dying them to colours I like.

I'm sorry you've had such an awful time lately - I hope things start to look up for you.

I have just bought some linen trousers from White Stuff - they feel really nice and are easy and comfortable to wear.

Fat Face are good for reasonably priced jeans and Sea Salt are good for striped t shirts (long and short sleeved).

Belle Linen Blend Wide Trouser in DARK NAVY

Shop the Belle Linen Blend Wide Trouser in DARK NAVY. We love the wide leg trend. It’s cool, comfy and so easy to move in (excellent for cartwheels). These ones are 100% linen with an elasticated tie-up waist.

Sorry for your loss and the horrible time you're going through.

Would any of these be along the right lines?

Oh @Pleasedontdothat you really have been through it, I'm so sorry and please accept my condolences.
I think you might need some bright colours in your life? I posted this top on another thread, I think it's lovely, great selection of colours, it's 100% cotton and crochet so it should be cool in the hot weather.

So sorry you have had an awful year. I follow an account on social media called style me happy and found a lovely group of women and great advice. I got an analysis and mini shop in my season and it really helped me when I was in a similar spot last year. Good luck go treat yourself!

Thanks for the suggestions

It's a pleasure. If you say whether any of them are on the right track we can come up with more. You may not feel up to it though.
Really hope things improve for you soon OP.

What a dreadful time you’ve had. M&S do great tapered linen trousers that look good rolled up. I wear them all the time in the summer. They also do a wide leg version.

bravotango · 12/05/2024 14:32

Sorry for everything you've been through, what a good idea to treat yourself. When you're up and about I would go to John Lewis, get a personal shopper to do you a capsule wardrobe and then hit the beauty counter for some posh face cream and a perfume
