Summer jacket - denim or something else?

Help! I need a lightweight jacket to wear with jeans & t-shirt or casual dresses for the morning school runs when it's too chilly for bare arms. Are denim jackets still the go-to or is there something equally versatile?

I'm 39, 5ft 4 and size 8. Usually wear jeans and white trainers/Saltwater sandals or a casual t-shirt/maxi dress. I'd like something plain not patterned that will go with various outfits but no idea what style - I haven't owned a denim jacket for 30 years and now it seems things may have moved on again. I had long line neutral open cardigans a couple of years ago but feel like they're very dated now so just stuck a jumper on this morning but am SO BORED of them and want to enjoy wearing my summer tops! My friend had a leather biker jacket on with her jeans and flats yesterday and looked so put together but I a) don't want to look like I'm copying her and b) not sure I can pull leather off. I never wear black, more a navy person.

Thank you stylish people!

Thanks for all the brilliant suggestions. I'm thinking a neutral cream/stone coloured cropped bomber or biker style in some sort of soft or textured fabric might be what I'm after. Or a navy jersey blazer or bomber. Maybe both!

I've got a denim style but cream jacket from Fat Face last year. Goes well with my dresses

I've got a denim jacket, it's Levi's and bloody heavy, it's more of a cold but dry weather jacket. Current jacket of choice is a bomber. I've got a leather biker and I can only wear that when it's cold might be my age

River Island have got some lovely jackets in at the moment

Have a similar jacket to this that I bought on holiday and live in it - skirts, dresses, jeans, trousers all go with it!

I’ve just got this from River Island, it’s really lovely! I tried it on with a midi dress and it looks nice but I absolutely love it the most with my jeans and a white tee

That’s really nice

Denim jackets are fine, I own one, although it is an oversized one I wear with dresses or tracksuits/ leggings, never jeans as I'm not a fan of double denim. I also have a leather jacket that is black and I love pairing with jeans or again dresses I think they make outfits look a lot cooler but there are nice brown options if you dont like black.

How about a plaid or plain shacket? ( I also have one of these 🙋I am aware I have a coat obsession) And they're great for those in-between days that my leather jacket seems to hot for. Lots of cute colours too.

I bought this one.
My daughter has a similar one from Zara.

I picked up a nice black broderie anglais bomber jacket in Tesco the other week.

I actually bought a red cropped jacket/blazer from Zara the other day too. Will go with a lot and so many of the other jackets are too long, baggy.

The Walthamstow FC replica away kit. I kid you not. It's a William Morris design on a bomber jacketand is gorgeous. I'm wearing mine today.

That is actually superb!

There’s a whole thread about quilted jackets . Would something like that work?

1mabon · 11/05/2024 19:12

Never been a fan of any denim garments, they remind me of the clothes cowboys wore/wear.

Scarletttulips · 12/05/2024 00:04

Jules do a lovely denim stretched jacket and it’s soft and comfortable and lots of colours to chose from.

@Grumblebees

I've just come back from Italy. Everyone was wearing a just below waist cut off trench. DD has just got one and they are the jacket of the summer. Linen ones are around too. Not all are belted but must be double breasted and look like a trench. Or double breasted blazer in linen. Denim - hasn't everyone already got one? If you must - quilted.

I really love my khaki cotton utility jacket - I got a longish one that covers my bum, and it goes with almost everything. (I also love my biker jacket and denim jacket)

This has blown my mind. Lifelong Newcastle United supporter here and I'm seriously considering buying this bomber jacket - it's absolutely wonderful! 😍

Thank you for the recommendation.

I ordered this shacket in black and it's superb. Seriously considering getting the blue and/or khaki too. Rapanui often have 'free shipping' weekend offers (usually on a bank holiday, I find), so that will save you pennies if you can hold off until then.
