Why is Marks & Spencer so obsessed with women wearing waistcoats?

I do not like waistcoats, I can’t see them without thinking of Suzie Quattro.

The new ones are awful. The fabrics look cheap. The colours are grim and you have to have pretty good arms for them to look anything less than hideous.

Stop with the waistcoats.

Monsoon, Jaeger, Next, Phase Eight - they are all doing them.
Just don’t buy one.

Floisme · 06/05/2024 17:26

I quite like a waistcoat and as far as I'm aware, they're not compulsory if you don't.

However I don't need to buy one as I already have some, and they're much nicer than any on the high street at the moment.

Mrsjayy · 06/05/2024 17:28

Everywhere has them they are in.

I remember wearing waistcoats in the 80s when they were "all the rage" 😂 I like them I'd probably look a bit matronly in one now

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 06/05/2024 17:29

You don’t wear them with bare arms, do you? How do you mean about needing good arms?

The fashion for them at the moment seems to be to wear them very tailored with very little underneath.

It works for women who are quite toned looking I think but certainly I would look ridiculous in them with flabby spotty arms and 36F norks trying to bust (ha) their way out through the arm holes.

EvaHara · 06/05/2024 17:35

Just a trend is all, although tailored waistcoats look good with a shirt and tailored trousers.

I think all the fashion people are dressing them with nothing underneath. 😕

Floisme · 06/05/2024 17:45

To be fair most of the ones in the shops at the moment are so flimsy as to be useless and they'd look a bit silly over anything. Give me a men's suit waistcoat any time.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 06/05/2024 17:48

I like waistcoats. They remind me of Gareth Southgate.

MattDamon · 06/05/2024 17:50

I follow women's football and they are very popular with the players off the pitch, but they have amazing arms! Plus they can go braless at that age.

Seems a bit young for M&S's demo.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 06/05/2024 17:51

Interesting! I should come here more often.

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2024 17:55

They're ubiquitous because they are very 'in' right now, especially worn without a shirt underneath. It's not my sort of look, so I'm not going there.

That’s how they are all styled

Thanks for the people who have come onto the thread to tell me not to buy one.

point of the thread is to discuss how awful they are and how yes I’m not going to buy one because they are awful.

Thanks for your input.

I've met Suzi Quattro, lovely woman. I also wore a leather waistcoat with cut offs. I was mentioned by someone on the radio who said that a woman wearing a black leather waistcoat and cutoffs was wearing the spirit of Reading ( back in the days when it was Reading Rock)

CarolynKnappShappeyShipwright · 06/05/2024 18:29

I absolutely love mine, I have two waistcoat/trouser suits, with the black one I have a blazer too. I wear nothing underneath and I do work on my arms! I feel confident and powerful on the days I wear them to work, and I wore the grey set to a fashion show and my picture went in the local paper!

the low rise trouser trend however….

CarolynKnappShappeyShipwright · 06/05/2024 18:32

It’s loose too to hides the bits I want to hide!

You're welcome, it's just that, as fashions go I think they're far from awful. They're the kind of trend you can join in wholeheartedly and go bare armed, or jog along behind at a distance - over a shirt or under a jacket etc. (I'd repeat 'or ignore' but I don't want to send you into a terminal meltdown.)

However I do understand that feeling of only wanting to hear from like minded people so I'll leave you to it.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 06/05/2024 18:35

Sorry. That was rude.

Love a low rise trouser

I agree, I find them really ugly. They're also extremely unsuitable for big boobs, which I have.

I guess, like most fashion, they're aimed at women with perfect figures.

Ponderingwindow · 06/05/2024 18:42

It would be absolutely hilarious to try to style one around my giant breasts. I can just picture the armholes of the size that would be required because no in bothers with darts anymore, the opening reaching my waist.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 06/05/2024 18:43

I had a breast reduction and even so wouldn’t wear them and work out on my arms.😁😁

They’re just so shit. I think the fabrics around are horrible maybe that’s why and the colours.

They don't work for me, but if they suit you, I can objectively see how great they would look.

My first thought when I see them is 'you've forgotten your shirt', but I fully recognise my mum probably thought something similar when everyone was wearing trousers and a skirt back in the 90s.
