Hello,
My son has terribly sore red skin around his mouth where he licks his lips, it looks like a red beard. We've tried multiple creams but they don't protect him all day at school & he's not the best at reapplying at lunch. Has anyone got any recommendations for something that will last all day?
Thanks

Blistex relief cream - the one with the red top in a metal tube it’s so good!! I slap a layer on before bed which helps and it’s quite greasy so lasts quite well!

DoverWight · 24/04/2024 18:38

Thanks we'll give that a try.

Is it outside of his lips op? My son had something similar recently when he was sucking on his (metal) water bottle. We were told to not use cream for a few days. Is he licking his lips because they’re dry?

A +D ointment, my son gets that same thing . You can get it from Amazon. Put loads before bed too. Also bepanthen .

I bought something called miracle balm for DGS who does the same. If he's here I use my moisturiser, Nivea or astral depending on which I'm using as neither have any actives.

Dermol cream from pharmacy 👌 I use it everyday for rosacea.

Sounds like peri-oral dermatitis and you need to ask your GP about treatment.

Yes it's all round his lips, but the lips themselves are ok. It's much worse in the cold & when he's at school - disappears in the holidays so could also be due to a bit of anxiety, but I think he licks around his lips & wipes his hand across them.

Dd had mild intolerances, leading to minor hives around her mouth. But then she licks and licks them and the skin gets all red and inflamed. A mild cortisone cream has been recommended but she hates it. We manage it by:

  1. endless application of lip balm. We like labello which is a better version of Nivea and works really well.
  2. bio oil at night. It stings for a minute when at its worst so I put it on when she is asleep.
suki1964 · 24/04/2024 22:29

Do check he hasnt Oral Thrush. Its common, can come from just having a bit of an oral problem, a course of antibiotics etc

I had it for ages before it was diagnosed , the outer corners of my mouth were crusty and sore. Once diagnosed and the correct treatment, healed in days

Bioderma balm at night time then a stick moisturiser during the day.

My ds used to get this. Sorted it with vaseline.

Gervhill · 25/04/2024 12:21

My daughter gets this and she uses some of my La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, there’s a cream or a gel but I think the cream is better for this. Then maybe throughout the day he could apply Vaseline from those little pots.

DoverWight · 25/04/2024 18:44

Thank you everyone, we're applying e45 or centraben, followed by a nappy rash cream with vaseline all over the top, then a stick balm in his school bag. The pharmacist said that's what they'd recommend, but it's still sore so thank you for your recommendations, we'll keep trying.

Nurse here , don't put this on the skin when so red and sore , it's for lips !

Lanolips or Lansinoh lanolin cream if he'll wear it. Lanolin is the best ingredient out there!
