What to wear with this dress?

I’m wearing this dress to a wedding soon but I think I might need some kind of cover up for warmth and I have no idea what to choose! Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks in advance :)

A pale pink blazer will make it more modern looking

Twixstar · 22/04/2024 20:03

I didn’t realise it looked old fashioned 😂

I’m not great with fashion…it fit flatteringly so I went for it 🤷‍♀️

I think it needs a more exciting texture to contrast with the somewhat mild dress. Something shaggy or furry or shiny or …

@Twixstar it’s not the worst dress in the world - but it’s not the most exciting, either. The cut and proportions and print do seem a little old fashioned. Take a look at & Other Stories ‘Occasion’ edit for comparison. (I particularly love the black puff sleeved dress.)

I think wrap dresses are a classic and not necessarily old fashioned. Some people might wear a shrug or similar over this to a wedding, which I think might date the look a bit and I think that's why the poster above suggested a blazer.

TheChosenTwo · 22/04/2024 20:21

I think it’s possibly more classic than old fashioned and I will always go with something that fits and makes me feel good too.
I think a blazer or something with quite sharp lines will really add to it.

StrangeNew · 22/04/2024 20:40

If the hem of the dress were taken up a little to above the knee, this type of cut of jacket might work well with it:

I agree. Something like this. A typical blazer will do nothing to liven it up.

Sorry I should clarify that I wasn’t taking offence at all - I’ll happily accept I’m fashion impaired. I’ve been toying with seeing a personal stylist one day (can’t justify the expense at the moment) but the outcome of that seems to depend on what people think of the stylist’s style 🙃

The vote seems to be for blazer - any thoughts on cut or length? I like my waist which is probably why the dress appealed but wouldn’t a blazer hide that? I knew from previous posts on here that the answer probably wasn’t going to be a shrug which is a shame as I’d have thought that’d be more flattering shape wise

I would go for a shorter, fitted blazer. I was told once to pick out the 3rd colour of an item to highlight it, so not the navy main colour, or coral/pink. It looks like the leaves are in a grey or light blue? Maybe try for that.

like this

or this

or the Marylebone from Boden, but it's a bit pricy.

WhereAreWeNow · 22/04/2024 22:28

I like a classic wrap dress. I agree it's really flattering if you have a small waist.
I would probably look for a cropped blazer or cardi. Something genuinely cropped that sits on the smallest part of your waist. https://www.zara.com/uk/en/basic-cropped-blazer-p01255763.html?v1=365979143

WednesdayAllTheWay · 22/04/2024 22:29

OP I like the dress but fyi a John Lewis personal styling appointment is s free. You obviously pay for the clothes you buy though 😃

Twixstar · 22/04/2024 22:29

Looking at all the links I’ve been sent with interest (my budget is lower end but inspiration’s definitely helpful) 🙂 Should the blazer match the shoes or is that not important?

I don't really know what people mean when they say "blazer". This is what Max Mara means.Personally I think blazers look terrible over dresses. Max Mara would seem to agree as they haven't put any of them with dresses.

tunainatin · 22/04/2024 22:35

I think it's a lovely dress. How about a pashmina shawl in pink?

StrangeNew · 22/04/2024 23:31

Long, belted, like the Ganni jacket I’ve linked above.

Or oversized, if the dress were much shorter.

If you chose a cropped jacket then it should be quite wide to counter the narrowness of the dress.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 23/04/2024 01:17

I am not good at posting links but Zara have a couple of cropped tops, blazer or voice, which might work. A short jacket will show your waist too.

I think it’s a lovely dress and I bet it is really flattering on. I wouldn’t pay too much heed to what’s currently on trend if the dress is pretty, comfortable, flattering and suitable, which it clearly is. (Sometimes so called ‘fashionable’ dresses posted on S&B threads are absolute horrors!)

Cantalever · 23/04/2024 10:34

I think its a lovely dress and bet it looks good on you. I have the sort of shape that this kind of dress suits, so understand why you like it. I'd go for a light coloured jacket - no need to exactly match the palest colour. As for length, try on various styles with the dress - you will know when one feels right.

Blimey, some right monstrosities in that selection.

ProbablyOnlySellOne · 23/04/2024 14:26

What about a jacket like this? I remember someone posting a picture of themselves in it in a thread (last year I think) and it looked really good - much better than the website photo. Not ground-breaking obviously or 'fashion' but I think it would match well with the dress. It would also help to emphasise your waist if that is your best feature as you say.
