It’s in July so will be (hopefully) warm, but I’m not sure how smart to go?!

Looking for some inspiration for people who have been to one recently!

Ds’s was last June, I wore a knee length black dress with black wedges, dh wore a suit.

most mums were in mid length dresses and sandals or linen trousers and top and most dads had suits on.

Seasalt floral midi length dress with a short linen jacket in early autumn. There's a lot of standing around so wear comfy shoes - nobody will be looking at your feet.

A silk floral dress from Edina Ronay and a pale Harris tweed knee length coat.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/04/2024 21:28

I wore a cotton dress made using this pattern . DH wore a suit but no tie.

I asked this question last year and got loads of helpful replies, I’ll see if I can find the thread.

BirthdayRainbow · 15/04/2024 22:41

My sons was last July. I wore a long dress, short sleeved with a vest top underneath for modesty and sandals. There was a real mix of outfits but I felt very comfortable with what I wore.

Misthios · 15/04/2024 22:46

no hats!

motherstongue · 15/04/2024 23:00

I wore a silk dress from LK Bennett. It was perfect as it was 37 degrees on the day of graduation.

I’ll have DS’s next summer and was always thought I’d wear one of my many dresses, but I’m now considering wearing a sari (I’m of Indian heritage).

I have a suitcase full that I never wear and one of particular sentimental value that was gifted from my (now deceased) in laws - I figured it would be a nice way of his grandparents sharing his special day 😊I’ve heard lots of graduates and families do wear traditional clothes from their different cultures so if this applies maybe worth considering?

if not go for it and wear something special. It’s a once in a lifetime experience and celebration of all their hard work!

@MooMinCow your post has made me go "ahhh!". What a lovely idea. It really was a case of anything goes last year. The focus is definitely on the young people. I travel a lot for work and have definitely seen a lot of cultural dress in recent years.

LiterallyOnFire · 16/04/2024 14:50

Midi dress and leather trainers.

CointreauVersial · 16/04/2024 14:54

I wore a ditsy floral print black midi dress and sandals. It was nice and sunny, and I looked just about right.

mumonthehill · 16/04/2024 14:58

I wore an Anthropologie Somerset maxi dress, blue jacket i got from vinted and blue pointed satin ballet pumps from ASOS. Also was a July graduation.

mitogoshi · 16/04/2024 15:10

Knee length seasalt dress, knee high boots and black trench coat for 2 uni graduations, principles dress and heeled sandals for passing out, wearing a pretty kitty dress this summer, footwear and coat depends on weather, might get luckier!

mitogoshi · 16/04/2024 15:13

There's a good mix of wedding/races outfits but others a bit more relaxed (especially those of us used to going to events on campus for work/personal reasons) just hope exh puts on something half decent for the photos this year, has form for underdressing Grin

Noras · 16/04/2024 15:16

Really interested and in particular in sensible but elegant shoe issue.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 16/04/2024 15:22

I'm wearing a black chiffon wrap dress with large splodgy blue and cream flowers (it's nicer than it sounds!). I have black shoes with block heels but if I can find a nudist pair I will get them. I have crap feet though (narrow with bunions) so need shoes with a strap to keep them from falling off so shoe shopping is not easy.

Edited to say there tends to be a wide variety of outfits (I'm a lecturer so see a lot of graduations) but most are ones that would be suitable for a wedding that isn't overly formal. So dressyish, but not overly so.

starfleet · 16/04/2024 15:40

The green Monsoon dress for DSs first graduation. The blue Whitestuff dress for his second. For both everyone wore a mixture of smart and casual.

I wore a Me & Em midi dress, no jacket (I carried a cardigan, but didn't need it. ). Some low heeled pointy slingback shoes.

I have my dd's graduation this summer and am wondering whether I can wear the same dress!

@Noras I was recovering from a broken leg at DS's first graduation so had to wear a very flattering Air Boot with a converse pump on the other foot. I still can't wear heels so wore some flat ballet shoes for the 2nd.

Of course you can wear the same dress.

I can't wear the same as I wore for ds1's as his was in 2020 and it was online so not really graduation style dress😁 I quite likely would otherwise though.

Sgtmajormummy · 16/04/2024 16:13

DS is having his in June (Italy).
I already have too many nice dresses and nowhere to wear them (!) so I’m planning to wear a blue polka dot wrap dress with a longish skirt and flutter short sleeves. Block heeled tan leather sandals (closed toe) and a blue satin shoulder bag on a chain.

He and a couple of friends are having stand-up drinks and a buffet for extended family in a small venue afterwards.
Then I’m sure they’ll have a night on the tiles!

Sgtmajormummy · 16/04/2024 16:18

These are a lot like mine.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 16/04/2024 16:21

I have had several graduation ceremonies. There is some variety but generally male guests wear suits or trousers shirt and blazer maybe a few will be in trousers with a shirt.

More variety amongst female guests, some suits, some dresses, some trousers/skirt and a top. I would say trainers are a bit too casual.

Traditional/national dress is definitely acceptable.
