Help S&B gurus! Getting biro out of handbag lining

I hoping someone can help please! I picked up a leather handbag in a local charity shop yesterday. Outside is fine but the inside (which is a light colour) is badly stained with biro. I have cleaned it out and tried everything to get the biro off but to no avail. I've tried soapy water, Vanish Gel, micellar water and even nail polish remover but it's not budging and I wondered if any of you lovely lot have any suggestions of anything else I could try?

I’d try blotting it off with antibacterial (alcohol) hand sanitizer.

Hair spray and blot it with cotton wool. Repeat and blot until it’s gone. Sounds weird but does work!

Shaving foam ! Cheap and cheerful type If you're able to pull the lining out the bag (to reduce risk of transfering the stain) use an old towel lay the lining on the towel and spray shaving foam (this expands massively!) give it a minute or two and blot with kitchen paper so you can see if the stain is lifting, repeat until stain has gone if the stain is stubborn you cam use a toothbrush on it with shaving foam, but go in a circle this time one direction carefully as not the spoil the lining,again leave a minute or two and blot again.
I've collected vintage bags for years and this method has never let me down I might have photos of process on my phone still

I can't find the pics, but I got black biro ink out of a vintage mullberry bag.
Took a bit of patience but worked.

I was going to say hairspray too. Wipe it whilst it's wet!

scrapsontheside · 12/04/2024 21:52

Also you need to let it dry thoroughly before putting the lining back or it will go musty and possibly mouldy!

Vodka, hairspray, Dr Beckmanns biro remover

NeedWineNow · 12/04/2024 22:07

I didn't realise there were so many other options! Thanks everyone!

@NeedWineNow any luck?

NeedWineNow · 14/04/2024 20:05

@scrapsontheside The hand sanitizer method didn't work for me. I'm going shopping on Tuesday and will head into Poundland to try and get a cheap shaving foam and hairspray and see if either of those work. Fingers crossed!
