If you were to buy an 18 yr old a watch for her birthday, what would you get? Budget about £150. £200 at a push?

Smart watch if she doesnt have one xx

Mushroomwithaview · 31/03/2024 06:50

Ahh, I should have been more specific. An analogue watch. Not interested in a smartwatch.

What about a Baby G?

A lot of teens seem to wear 90s inspired things these days.

AvoSourdough · 31/03/2024 14:54

Olivia Burton?

Hugo Boss is what my son and friends are wearing at19/20.Both sexes.

Limit the price, make sure its easy to read the time. If it breaks down after the wraanty ends, you, they can soon get a new one as like most things, watches are not made as they were before.

Doglover posted a pic of a nice watch

Deardear17 · 31/03/2024 16:49

Vivienne Westwood. And you can find lots of deals on watchshop x

SuncreamAndIceCream · 31/03/2024 16:49

A Seiko, Orient, Tissot, Timex or Citizen of some sort. Good solid reliable brands.

I would stay away from anything with a "designer" name on, the parts are usually rubbish & they are difficult to fix

NavyPeer · 31/03/2024 16:53

Do they want a watch?

I only ask because I always feel a bit sad about my 21st birthday present. I got a fashion watch in that price range, a Michael Kors once which was super fashionable at the time. I wore it for a year, and it fell out of fashion and I haven’t worn it since. Seems a shame as it was a big birthday and it really wasn’t cheap.

if you are keen to get a watch- I would suggest getting a Casio tbh. Much cheaper than your budget and eternally cool. They do them with gold and silver bracelets.

otherwise Skagen is a nice minimalist brand and not too pricey!

Btw, if possible, don't buy a bettery powered watch and if you do, get a lifetime replacement batter on it via Timpsons - we got this offer years ago and my watch is 20 years old and after the first batter that lasted several years, the new ones last around 18 months, so worth the money, that is if watch does not breakdown. Hugo Boss, rectangular watches look good and a dateless IMO

Mushroomwithaview · 31/03/2024 20:42

Fair point @NavyPeer and yes, I think she would like a watch for her birthday. She has been borrowing an old Accurist bracelet watch of mine recently to wear instead of her waterproof digital work watch. My alternative idea for her 18th is a tennis-style bracelet made of her favourite stone.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator - when you say don't get battery, what is the alternative? My guess is that you don't mean wind-up like my Granny had?!

Mechanical watches are lovely but you will not get a low profile women's watch for £200! Lol 🤣

I have a couple of Seiko 5's which are great but they are relatively chunky/sporty looking. Super reliable though. Depends what your DD is into in terms of style.

I second this suggestion.

familyissues12345 · 31/03/2024 20:59

My son bought his gf (19) a Vivienne Westwood watch in the Black Friday deals. Cost about £130 I think (down from £250?)

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/03/2024 21:06

A Mondaine would be my brand of choice.

Runnerduck34 · 31/03/2024 21:11

If she borrows your accurate bracelet watch get her something similar- classic style not fast fashion
DS choose a fashion watch for his 18th within a year stopped wearing it as no longer liked it/ out of fashion. Got him a second hand longine for his 21st and he still loves it.
DD desperate for a vivenne westwood fashion ring for her 18th- stone fell out within a few months- was only glued- in just paying for the name - will buy her some proper jewellery for her 21st.
Most 18 year olds are too young to discern between expensive 5 minute high fashion and something of quality they will wear for years

yes, wind up one as battery keeps on going - if you get the long lasting ones they last a few years but the replacement cost is massive - get a life time battery replacement deal if its battery via Timco or something like that based in various supermarkets.

Wind up watches hard to come-by but often more accurate

EndlesslyDistracted · 31/03/2024 21:14

Citizen Eco-Drive are solar and therefore don't need batteries. I've had one for about 20 years and although I don't wear it often now because I have a smartwatch I still love it.
